Mountain Sunset - Master Study Bohdan Saliy with Memileo Impasto Brushes

Hi everyone,
it is time for me to post my first own art here.
It’s been like a year since I last painted something, but I really wanted to try out the effect of the Memileo Impasto Brush-pack (huge thanks to @emilm for creating those brushes ).

For this I chose an acrylic painting of one of my favourite artists, who goes under the names of Gudzart / Bohdan Saliy. He is an Ukrainian master of colourful landscapes, who unfortunately also has to defend his country right now.
Please have a look at the reference picture here and find out more about him here (shop, short bio).

My goal was not a perfect imitation of the original, but to see how close I could get to traditional acrylic on canvas art - and to understand a bit better, why those super saturated colours work so well here.

I am super happy with the result, but I also noticed some areas where I hit some limits. The flowers for example I was unable to paint in a way like in the original. I think the key would be brushstrokes with a more “rounded” ending and multiple colours on the virtual brush-tip at once. Like if some of the brush hairs were dipped in one and some in the other colour.

I tried modifying a brush to use a colour gradient, but sacrificed some of the 3D paint effect and also it wasn’t fun to use, not being able to use the colour picker.
Maybe some of you are more experienced with the brush engine or have collected a brush like this, I would be glad to know about it. :slightly_smiling_face:

This is the final artwork:

And here is a gif of the WIP:
Animation

Everything was done with Krita under Kubuntu 24.04 LTS on an old and small Wacom Bamboo Pen CTL-470 drawing tablet (no tilt support). Don’t need much to achieve great results with those great brushes and Krita. :flexed_biceps:

Hope you enjoy this art! Feedback is welcome.

Oh my gosh! This is beautiful! The colors, the lighting, it’s chef’s kiss
Amazing work!

Your use of yellow and purple for the sky and mountain range in the background is immaculate!

Thank you all for the kind words!
I agree the colours of the sky and sunset are the strong point of this painting - while I may have slightly overworked the foreground, making it a little too busy.
Of course, I stand on the shoulders of a giant here, the original artist is the one having perfected sunsets (but also bright daylight scenery) in his traditional works over the years. :+1:

I had this art printed as poster by the German service “Saal Digital” by the way, and the colours turned out really great there as well. In some parts of the picture (like the bright green grass on the left side) the illusion of the Memileo brush is so good, that it feels like you could scratch thick paint from the “canvas”. :star_struck:

This is sooooooo good. Crazy good! Well done!

I don’t have any critizise, for me is perfect. And is rare an image that saturated works, but it truly works.

Did you use a single layer or more than one?

PS: I’m also team Wacom Bamboo Pen CTL-470 :flexed_biceps: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: haha

Thank you @sooz ! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: You have my permission to post the art on Mastodon.art and Krita.org, but I prefer to not have it on X and reddit as they are commercial platforms.

You can use the following Alt-Text (last sentence can be left out IF a description includes the similar info about the work/artist that was referenced):

A digital painting in saturated colours that depicts a calm mountain sunset and imitates the look of a traditional acrylic painting on canvas. The background shows the setting sun shining through blue and purple clouds in warm orange tones. Below the sun, two rows of rounded mountains in calmer violet and blue tones are surrounded by mist. The foreground is a gentle mountain slope falling from right to left, covered in dry grass and brightly coloured fantasy leaves in shades of blue and green, with dark shadows in between. Countless multicoloured flowers grow in this meadow, their petals mostly white, pink and orange. In the distance, dark green spruce or fir trees rise above the grassy mountain slope. They too are bathed in the warm reddish evening sunlight. This piece was drawn by “Tale of a Cat” in the style of a traditional work from “Gudzart”.

Gudzart and Bohdan Saliy are probably both artist names. The artist of the original picture is active on DeviantArt again, so linking to his work (see start post) there would surely be appreciated by him. Not mentioning the reference and its artist is not an option here in my opinion.

You have my respect for doing all this contest and promotion work each month, thanks a lot. :+1:

I used multiple layers here, but not as many as I usually do. The brushes used here can only be used to their full effect if you stay on a single layer in the area you currently work on. This way they can “smear” a bit and mix the colours.
If you start a new layer, it is more like you continue painting on a fully dried picture. This is also fine, depending on what look you go for. :slightly_smiling_face:

Painting on few layers felt more natural here as well, but slightly less “safe”. As the brushes create some randomness and “happy little accidents” it is probably best to just paint and accept paintovers instead of using hundreds of layers. :man_shrugging:

Remember you can always merge down layers if you have too many of them.

Lovely flowers in foreground!

 nice!

Thank you.

I’ve been painting with Krita for years, but only made the switch to Linux last year. No regrets so far - Kubuntu LTS works on my modern PC just as well as on the older systems of the four relatives that switched after me. (Ssh…we don’t talk about printer issues. They’ll haunt you on every OS forever.)

Thank you for coming by - and for all your public work in general. From your webcomic to your support for Krita - and open source in general - from your video tutorials to hardware tests - your efforts have been relevant for me in so many ways. :star_struck:

As the others have already said, very nicely done. Tremendously beautiful. If I may offer, not a criticism but a suggestion: add a human interest to the gorgeous scene. It is a path, I believe, so maybe a person or two, walking a dog, or a weary traveller admiring the view. Lots of ways to interpret that. But that’s where you come in. and a since you are skillful at using layers, just have fun. Either way: bravo!

Thank you for your suggestions, ARadhahn.
I thought about adding a person for a moment, but in the end decided against it. The artist I referenced basically never adds them, and still his work speaks to me a lot. I wanted to delve into the genre of (pure) landscape paintings, as actually most of my works so far were people and animals. Also, I think there is already enough going on with the flowers in the foreground.

Nonetheless, I do agree that it can be a great idea to add some humans and pets, like this other June/July contest winner demonstrated: Summer Retreat

All good. It’s a wonderful effort; and you have a very good attitude as well. Best wishes!

Love the rich colours. I’ve just installed Krita on my android tablet and seems to work ok although the Memileo brushes were a bit slow but still usable. They are great brushes

@Elnyp: They’re a bit slow on my Android tablet too. I just gotta remember to paint a bit more slowly. :person_shrugging: But they’re my favorites.

I haven’t installed Krita for more than a few days but hopefully will get to grips with it soon. I’m surprised how fast my android tablet is responding as it’s not the latest !
