MPP/"Tablet" (2-in1) laptop input [hints & small errors]

Type of device* : 2-in-1 laptop + MPP 2.6 Pen
Brand and version of the device: MSI Summit
System** : CachyOS + KDE Plasma

Overall, I’ve had less problems using KDE over XFCE to properly differentiate touch/mouse/pen input, so I’ll just say it comes down to Wayland; still, I assume most of the small input detection errors are hapening outside of Krita’s ability to fix these.

The MPP Pen is always detected with no problems by the system/software as a pressure device, but touch is a different monster.

Oftentimes, after a restart or creating a new file, Krita will read my touch input as a “left click” rather than finger swipe, and two/three finger gestures are total jank, working very rarely how they, in theory, should. This is less of a plea for a fix, and more just my personal workarounds to the issue!

  • When touch gets read as mouse input, just hovering the Pen near the screen solves the problem fully
  • Since gestures often don’t get registered properly (most often they’re read as one-finger tap, rather than two/three finger taps/swipes), I just use the top toolbar instead. Not sure how to turn off some of the gestures, though
    • Curiously, all pinch/zoom/move actions always work fine & are butter smooth, so 0 complaints there!
    • For navigation on a single illustration, using the navigator with touch is probably your best bet
  • Using the brush/palette dockers is a bit wonky, but 100% reliable with touch/pen, so that also works well

These are the things I’ve spotted so far. Will add to this thread if I find anything else! I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Wayland + Krita’s performance with the touch/pen combo overall, so again, this isn’t as much a plea for a fix but just general things I’ve spotted.

That touch painting is enabled until you show Krita your stylus can probably be fixed by changing Settings > Configure Krita > General > Tools > Touch Painting to Disabled.

It sounds like it’s set to Automatic for you currently, which will toggle touch painting when Krita sees a stylus. The idea being that it causes the least amount of “I can’t draw it only pans” and “I can’t pan it only draws” questions that we used to get. And it’s not remembered permanently to avoid “I tried a/lost my stylus and now I can’t draw anymore” situations.

Oh dang, you’re right! I was 100% sure I disabled it, but my brain probably just skipped the “automatic” and read “disabled” lol.

That does make sense though, I absolutely get it. Thanks a lot for the heads up!
Now I’ll only mess up the gestures from time to time. :kikiexcited:

Some other random notes I’ve spotted recently;

  • Sometimes, touch will not properly register. If I use the UI, I have to hover the pen over UI sometimes or otherwise my input will be ignored. Then, if I try using the canvas afterwards, I’ll have to hover the pen over the canvas again or I won’t be able to use any canvas operation
    • My only solution is just using the mouse for most UI operation.
    • This happens regardless of the Krita settings (afaik)
  • In general touch seems to be a little bit unpredictable in some UI areas, but I’ll need to mess around a bit more to get a feel for what exactly is going on
