Now I am involved in the 250 cylinder challenge but I found this video on youtube by practice_sketching:

do you know if what is being said in it is right?
Please help
Thanks in advance

Hi there I saw you have trouble with intersecting object. I had the same problem too before, and your sketches reminds me of my old practice files that I lost.

From my experience if two or more objects are in the same scene then you need to make some indication about their depth. There are several ways to do it, and I think you did the cast shadow one, so might I suggest using lineweight and adding occlusion shadow. You can use other shadow type and complete the shading but I think these 2 are enough for basic shape practice.

  1. Lineweight, is the variable of line width to indicate the area that are impacted by the placement of lightsource, thin line means the area facing the light source, thick line means facing away from the light source. There is also tappering from thick to thin line when transitioning.

  2. Occlusion shadow, shadow that is formed because of the area it is in is surrounded by objects or is occluded by objects. The easiest way to observe this is in video games, you can turn on and off the occlusion shadow in the graphic setting usually, and you can see the changes in wall creases, corner of room, or any parts that has 2 or more object placed close to each other.

Do you happen to read mr. Vilppu’s book too?

Which book by glenn Vilppu do you mean?

‘Vilppu Drawing Manual’. The practice sequence of spatial boxes for perspective practice and beans/flour sacks for establishing volume in the drawing, these reminds me of what I did several years ago.

I talked to other people on other thread here few days ago, about the knowledge wall that I got stuck in during my practice in the beginning of my art study, which was figure sketching, and the solution was the instruction mr. Vilppu wrote in his book on how to practice at the beginning. In the book it is explained that theory is quite simple to understand but learning how to practice it is not so clear.

Well no matter where you learn about the practice sequence, I think you are on the right track. Keep up the great work :+1:
