My file didn't save but i clearly saved it

Need urgent help.

I clearly pressed “Ctrl S” for save and krita informed me that my file was saved so I closed the program but upon checking and opening it again, my more than 5-hour progress was gone! I looked for the “%temp%” file but it wasn’t there, so I looked at the session .txt file and it said it completed saving but where is my file!?

Attached is the .txt file session note.

P.S. krita didn’t technically crash per se but I don’t know a more appropriate tag so sorry for that.

Have you tried sorting the folder by date instead of name to see if it’s in there? It looks like you have a leading period in the file name and spaces, maybe that’s not a problem at all, it just looks odd.

There are only two files for that artwork, a .kra one and a .kra~, searched everywhere and conducted a full drive search but found no other copies. Both are not the updated saved file that I edited this early morning. The file name with the periods are the auto-save files that krita has in case of a crash and are deleted after the program closes normally. I closed krita normally since I already saved the file so it says there, “removing autosave file”. But still, since I saved it and the incremental backup saved it, the .kra and .kra~ files should be the updated one.

Hm the log says you opened the file at 4:15, saved it once at 4:31 and then never again until you closed Krita at 8:30 (only autosaves), so you threw away 4h of editing.

Seriously? Where’d you see that? And doesn’t “Ctrl S” count as saving? It says “completed saving” there on the image attached. I pressed that multiple times on different intervals. Does that only save the autosave.kra file? But if that is gone, where is my saved file?

Manual saving gives lines like
01 Oct 2022 04:31:00 +0800: Saving Document C:\Users\Hannah\Downloads\Shiihan's Digital Works\Fauuuuu 9.26 hapiba.kra as C:\Users\Hannah\Downloads\Shiihan's Digital Works\Fauuuuu 9.26 hapiba.kra (mime: application/x-krita). 2048 * 2048 pixels, 17 layers. 101 frames, 24 framerate. Export configuration: No configuration

And there are only two lines with “Saving Document <filename> as <filename>”.
Apparently you accidentally hit save twice within less than a second, and the second one ended with "Failed to initiate saving ", because it’s already doing that.

Of course Ctrl+S should save, given that you didn’t change the default keyboard shortcut for it, and nothing grabbed keyboard focus so the shortcut wasn’t activated. But the log doesn’t have any sign that you actually initiated a regular save for hours on the long Oct 1 session and then quit Krita.

Oh so it cancelled the saving… damn. So, I did do something wrong (that’s what I initially thought). Thank you for clearing it up, I even submitted a bug report… that’s embarrassing. I’ve learned my lesson, albeit the hard way. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Wait so pressing ctrl+s again before the first ctrl+s is done won’t save either of them and leave you with no saved file? That sounds like a bug to me.

This topic is another proof that one should use the function/shortcut ‘‘File’’ >> ‘‘Save Incremental Backup’’ F4 every few minutes while painting.
It is not an issue to have too many backups, the issue is the opposite, and for those who are low on disk space it is always possible to purge a batch of backups to make room when needed, but please not all backups.
Additionally, one should raise the number of security-backups Krita should hold, I have set them to 5 for instance, you can find it in Krita via ‘‘Settings’’ >> ‘‘Configure Krita’’ >> ‘‘General’’ in the Tab ‘‘File Handling’’ it is the setting ‘‘Number of Backup Files Kept’’.

No for me when I do ctrl and the file is saving ( we can see the progress for some big files) and I press ctrl s again it says there is already a process of saving going on. If i press okay then it will continue the first save process and save . I will test again to check this.

Yes that’s what Iwas trying to say, only the second prompt to save when Krita is already in the middle of saving the same file gets canceled, the initial save operation did complete according to the log.

As for why no other save attempt shows up, I can’t tell, if it’s user error or something weird prevented Krita from even starting to save, but for me Krita has always saved when I told it to, and I ususally make sure the “*” after the document name that indicates unsaved modifications in the title bar goes away (though sometimes it only does after I undo/redo the last step).
