My Huion Kamvas 22" monitor 'stopped idenfying device" ( thinking about replacements )
I got this drawing moitor in 2021… I am sad that its only been 2 years and it has died.
Monitor still works as a monitor, the cabling is fine, I believe the chip that handles the pen, on the monitor died though.
Anyways, with black friday coming up I am thinking, of other drawing monitor brands, even though I like Huion a lot.
The Huion Kamvas 22" I got, has gotten 100 dollars more expensive since my purchse ( same model etc, no spec changes ) currently though, its listed on amazon that can save 100 dollars with coupon I think it was.
Xp Pen has same discount on their 22" inch monitor, specs seem same as the huion, base price, is 50 dollars less than huion.
the Gaomon 22" starts 50 dollars less than the xp pen, and. also has the same coupon deal. Price wise the winner.
does anyone have experience with quality of the gaomon and the xp pen drawing monitors?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi, sorry to hear that!

Well, I won’t hide it, I’m very biased against pen displays. I think this is a marketing scheme to upsell to people making them think that they need to use a high-end display device and that all “real” artists use such devices, which is not true at all.

So yeah, my advice would be to go with a plain pen tablet, without a screen. These cost 1/4th of the price and are basically indestructible compared to a fragile and expensive pen display :stuck_out_tongue: I ditched my Kamvas 16 Pro 4K for a Huion Giano and never looked back.

On the other hand, I completely understand that if someone is already used to a pen display, or comes from a traditional art background, then it may not be an option. In this case, I hope someone else can make a recommendation. However, I would give another brand a try, because my Huion Kamvas was very blurry (it had a severe motion blur, despite being supposedly 60Hz). But maybe all brands have this issue, I don’t know.

Yeah I’ve been playing with the thought of getting a display tablet many times, but even if I were to spend quite a lot, there always seemed to be some drawback that made me stay with plain tablet…

That said, David Revoy published a review of the XP-Pen Artist Pro 16 (Gen 2) a few days ago, and has a lot of praise for it. He says it’s the first display tablet to not feel laggy, and it also seems to have really good tilt feedback (the one on my cheap XP-Pen Deco01 is rather horrible, almost unusable. Okay it also was like 10% the price of that baby, but to my knowledge their display tablets weren’t really much better a few years ago).

To me, 16" QHD has been the most tempting category so far, 22" or 24" would definitely be too clunky, and David apparently also never found a setup for the Artist 24 Pro (he has a review for that one too btw.) he was 100% happy with. The setup he shows with the 16" display tablet is exactly what I’d have in mind too, so I’m more tempted than ever to spend the money, but then again, I’m still just a mediocre hobby artist…

Thank you lynx
I’ll look for the xp pen reviews. I was laning towards that one, the gaomon is less costly, but I have not heard much about it as a product.
YRH, I have trouble with those stylus’s that don’t actually ‘draw’ on the screen, ( of course I havent tried one in about 10 years, but I was so happy when I got my first drawing monitor, and my desire to paint increased a lot. ) my first drawing monitor, ( may ) still work. It is a Fex 19" weighs a ton, the pens kept needing to be replaced, and I had a cable short when I replaced it with the Huion.
The Huion was great, light weight, but, the connections I think are ill placed and ill protected, causing for many ‘bumps’ and probably why it eventually broke.
Huion was my alternative to Wacom, which is priced so ridiculously high, no way I could justify the purchase. But, Huion has continued to climb in price also since I bought it.
I’ll go with a drawing monitor again, I’ll do a bit more checking about as well

Not sure what customer protections you have in your area, but in my case anything I buy online can be returned within 2 weeks without any special reason. So I think it’s a good way to try a new device (gently, to not wear it down :grinning:). I would watch these reviews and try a new brand.

I would be wary to downgrade to 16 inch if you are used to 22 though… May feel cramped.

I can confirm also the tilt on my Huion feels like a gimmick, it’s not accurate at all and I don’t use it.

I know this sounds so basic, but have you updated both the Huion driver and your graphics card driver (and any windows updates) to check that doesn’t solve the problem? I’ve had my Huion Kamvas Pro since 2019 (although I think the 2019 model is different to the later ones they sold and they don’t seem to make it anymore). It’s still going strong and I think it’s brilliant. But when certain drivers or windows (if that’s what you’re using) need updating the most random things get really buggy.

Thank you Sketchy, Yeah, I am sure its “dead” I did soem checking, and I have found a couple posts in various places that pointed to the chipset that handles the pen controller, in the monitor occasionally burns out.
YRH, yeah no way I coudl downgrade to a 16 inch monitor now hehe.
I emailed Huion, and not had a reply ( other than automated ) yet.
I’ll see if they suggest anything.
Xp Pen is looking more and more promising.

I hope there’s something Huion can do as that is such a short time for it to have a fault and stop working. :crossed_fingers:

Well, I am going to go with the XPPen Artist24 FHD Drawing Tablet with Screen, for my replacement. its about 485 US in price for the Black Friday sale. The Huion ( same size, 23.7 inch ) was 720 on its sale price.
the only difference, is that the Huion is 140% sRGB, and the XPPEN is 130%sRBG
previous model that went bad was 122% so, I figure, saving a couple hundred dollars, and having improvement in size and colur scale is nice.

Huion customer service, wanted me to “just replace” the 50 dollar cable, to test it.
However, it is clearly not the cable, and took me about 10 emails to explain the issue. They were nice enough, but, waited til 8 emails in, to tell me that my warranty unfortunately had just expired a few days ago. ( which I expected was the case ) I said "well thanks, you could have saved me some trouble and told me that earlier, now i am without drawing tool. and no hope to fix this. "
the CS agent said they woudl like to offer me a refurbished Huion 13 inch, but I’d have to pay for shipping and customs. I declined.
13 inch would have been a big downgrade, as well as the 30 dollars shipping, I imagine customs would have been a nightmare. ( last time I paid customs was in 2017, and it was bout 50 dollars )
I figured, its best just to put that towards a new device

Hey! Sorry to hear about the customer service… Yeah, I don’t have a great experience with their international(?) customer service. I once reported a bug with the driver software’s incorrect aspect ratio, and they totally misunderstood or glossed over it. Fortunately, the bug was fixed later anyway.

Another time I ordered a pen from the official Huion store, they gave me wrong information about where it will be shipped from, but fortunately they were magnanimous enough to bear the import costs. So yeah, the experience can be hit and miss

But back to your device, I think your pick looks like a pretty sweet deal! Probably the resolution will feel a bit low for 24", but on the other hand, if the experience is good then I’d take that over a higher res. When I was still experimenting with pen displays, I first had a Kamvas 16 Pro FHD and really liked it with the exception of the pen which seemed to catch on the nib somehow and produced a bad pressure response :frowning: After that I tried a 4K model and again was dismayed that it felt so blurry and laggish on top of costing a small fortune…

Let us know your experiences with the new device, I hope it works great!

just got the xp pen 24 installed, works nice, I may have to adjust pressure somewhere they support with linux drivers as well which is more than huion did.
I liked huion, but, wary after losing suc h an expensive dvice in only a couple years.
