So i launched Krita (the free version) and switch my resources path then i closed it and it started to get stuck on the loading resources, then i tried the steam version and its still stuck on the loading resources.
Hello @Lucas_LK, and welcome to the forum!
For normal installations, a rebuild of Kritaâs resource cache can be very time-consuming, depending on the number of resources. So, maybe you should have given Krita more time. Or sometimes it helps when itâs stuck with rebuilding huge resource collections into database, to terminate Krita and to rerun it after you deliberately shot it down, to give it a second or even a third run.
It doesnât matter if you use Krita Steam or Krita original, they will share the resources. This means Krita for Steam looks into the same configuration and tries to load the resources from there. So if your standard installation has such an issue, Steam wonât help to solve it.
Did you assure, before you restarted Krita, that the resources were copied completely over to the new location? I just donât know if Krita will do this for you after you made the setting, or if it relocates the resources after restarting Krita, or if even you must copy the resources over to the new location before Krita can be restarted.
By the way, which operating system are you using? This is important to help you on point.
Iâm out now for at least an hour, but maybe Iâm not back before tomorrow. So take your time and try if the above hint helps, if not we must âcutâ a little deeper. ![]()

If you specify a new folder name which exists and is empty then krita will create a new default set of resources in that newly specified folder. That doesnât take a long time.
If you had copied everything in the old resources folder to the new folder then it should start as normal with no timing differences.
If itâs stuck on Loading Resources, that suggests some corruption of something that had been placed in the new resources folder.
I am on windows 11. So what i did was pick a new path which was just my other hard drive but i did not put it in a folder just picked the path to the hard drive then i just immediately closed the program and when i launched it again it was stuck on that loading screen/ program not responding. This is also my first time using Krita
Iâd suggest that you create a folder on the âotherâ hard drive, called R-Krita (resources for krita) and set that to be the location for the resources.
On restart, that should give you a new set of default resources to use.
If you want to have all the existing resources in the new one, then just copy the existing krita resources folder to the other drive and then set it to be the location of the resources.
Why do you want the resources folder to be on a different drive?
How do i change the location for where the resources go with out opening Krita? I wanted my pictures to go to that drive but i didnât pay much attention to what i changed as it is my first time using Krita and i accidently changed the path for resources.
Ah, yes, I forgot about that.
Using File Explorer, go to the C:/Users/{your username}/AppData/Local folder and you will find a file called kritarc near the end of the list of files there.
Edit kritarc with Notepad (or whatever text editor you use) and look for the line that says
ResourceDirectory={file path}
Edit that to say ResourceDirectory=C:/Users/{your username}/AppData/Roaming/krita then Save the edit and Quit the editor.
Then start krita. It should all be back to normal after that.
You use Save, and Save As to save .kra files (krita document files) wherever you want them to go to.
You use Export to pump out .png or .jpg or whatever image format file you want to any place you want them to go to.
The path for resources is where krita expects to find its resources (brushes, patterns, gradients, various operating settings, etc) and where it stores its resources. Those are nothing to do with your personal artwork and itâs a good idea to leave them alone.
Edit Add:
Do they share the same kritarc configuration file?
If not, that Steam one needs to be found and edited as described above.
Yes, they do.

Thank you it works now
