Back in 2023 I painted this portrait of my wife while we were living in the dessert in the north of Mexico. We both have great memories from that time. I truly enjoyed painting this one, I luckily managed to capture her inner beauty and goodness. No sketch or base drawing for this one, just went straight into the big shapes and progressively went smaller and smaller into the final details. I recorded the process and edited an accelerated video of it. Hope you like it!
Thank you for this. It is a lovely piece. And thank you for the video. I’m so glad you posted it. It was an entire art class in one video. You showed me so much. A question - when you say you did not use a sketch or base drawing as a reference, do you mean this was completely from memory? If so, that is fantastic. I can’t seem to keep the total image let alone the details of it in my mind for very long. I must have something to refer back on to bring those details back to mind. Thank you once again.
Hello @relink . Thanks for your kind words, I’m glad you liked this portrait. By no means it was painted by memory, I would be a genius if I could do that, haha. I used a photograph as reference. What I meant when I said I didn’t sketch it is that I jumped straight into painting, instead of first doing a line drawing to use as a base. No line drawing, just big chunks of painting and progressive refine. I hope I made myself clear . Take care!
Wonderful portrait of a beautiful woman!
I love your colour blocking technique, too, it’s something I need to try again at some point. I only remember using it once…
Watching the video I was most amazed at how fast and effortless you seemed to paint the shiny earrings. It’s like magic!
Hi @TaleOfACat . Thanks for your kind words. This colour blocking technique comes out of my traditional painting approach, of course, digital medium is much more forgiving though, so we can go and throw paint without fear or doubts since everything is “undoable”, haha. Regarding the earrings, it’s all about contrast . Thanks again!

“Portrait of a lovely young woman laying back on a comfortable couch. She is wearing a red knitted blouse and a pair of silver earrings. Her face, bathed by sunlight, turns away to see the world outside her window."
