Need Help on the face

Its still a Wip but I need help on how to not make things look flat. Thank you!

You’re off to a great start! I like how you did the eyes and chin

It may be helpful to sketch the structure of the head first before painting!

If that’s not your thing it may also help to try and leave some sharp edges in there too – notice how the nose in the image sharply contrasts against the face, theres no blending/softness there. The wrinkle you did is an example of that too, it pops out because its contrasting.

Another thing that may also help is limiting your palette to light and dark, and then deal with the midtones later. When I find myself lost in value it helps to just try and think of 2 things at a time.

i recommend trying to posterize the original to see how many layers of value there are in the image. the flatness happens when you posterize so much that you lose the more subtle values in the piece. try and pick up on where the subtle values are. the lips in the original has a lot of variety in value.
