Hey guys, on threads, everyone are talking about this new social media app called, “CARA”. Says made by artists for artists. I saw looks promising but still loads slow on homepage cause the sudden increase of people joining.
Anyone using it? Any thoughts on the new app?
It says there will be no ai art and also banning ai art. Which is good. I have no hate for ai art, its their choice for hobby but I dont want to see it. So this app is good for that.
I have heard of it. But now I am tired of all the good place getting bought and becoming rotten later. It did with deviant art, art station etc. I would suggest keeping a personal website (ideally selfhosted) as a backup
Hello, it’s my first time hearing about Cara, so I went to check it.
So far, I’ve only seen a few pages as a guest.
Spontaneous reactions to Cara:
Description page: I like that the software used to draw is listed for each piece.
Home page: It’s definitely refreshing to see no AI art on the whole screen : it feels really good to notice some drawing imperfections and such, instead of just seeing ““perfect”” high-resolution / AI-enhanced artworks everywhere…
Uploading process: I’m curious as to what “No AI art” implies for the moderation team (some people will always try to put AI art onto a no-AI website, whether it was modified by human or not), so I’ll definitely look into that aspect as well. So far the checks look mainly automated, with humans intervention in last resort (seen in “About Cara” page).
Description page: The user interface of the posts’ description looks exactly like Twitter threads lol. Meanwhile the main interface reminds me of Artstation and such. So it doesn’t feel new at all, but at the same time it feels new; it’s quite funny. It could trend real fast or be overlooked easily, I have no idea how it will go. (My comment is missing a lot of key features I’m sure, because I have only checked the main pages.)
Conclusion: I was not really convinced by the idea at first, but it does feel like it could be a great app. I mean, the concept had to arise at some point! I just wonder about the future of it… And I would be curious to hear about it from a regular user.
About the portfolio website:
I also agree with @raghukamath about the portfolio aspect. Keep in mind that any service you are currently using could disappear or be heavily twisted at some point of its existence. We’ve seen how quickly tables turn with many platforms, X is one of the most known due to its name change and diplomatic use, but not the only one.
That’s why it’s important to have different platforms AND especially a personal website (that only you own) with a backup of everything. If not, your account could be mistakenly closed or unreachable for technical reasons, and you could lose your entire clients base if no alternative were provided to your clients.
News about opting-out of AI training:
Side-note: Recently on Instagram, there’s a form to opt-out of AI training in the Help Center.
Personally I gew weary of sites and services claiming to help or empower artists because in the last decade every single one of them I came across turned out to be a scam or exploit artists in other ways. That’s why I got cautious and always wait for some time before I sign up for anything.
I found out about this site thanks to this post, it seems nice (at this point) it even has a choice for picking how much random stuff you want to see vs. people you follow which I liked as well. We’ll have to wait and see if it will be picked up by majority of artists and how well they will perform under loads of users when that happens. I personally liked it and I signed up, cant be worse than Instagram I guess.
Also seeing a lot of art (and not random stuff - looking at you Youtube) when you open the application of a social media platform is a pleasure
Looks very similar to artstation, probably a good idea till the corruption reaches here too. BTW never heard of it before. I will wait till it reaches mainstream status before investing time.
As I understand it, the site is paid for by a single individual. The main draw is that it integrates Glaze anti-AI processing so you can add protection when you upload.
According to the blog, the site has been overwhelmed by an influx of new members coupled with attacks. I think I read before that some users were creating multiple accounts to circumvent the upload quota limits.
It also says that Glaze is currently disabled:
There’s plenty of information about the site and the motivation behind it here:
I checked the new Instagram rules that will allow them to train AI on our posts by default unless we object to it, which requires filling an objection form that’s quite well hidden in their app’s options.
That’s what pushed me to make an account on Cara today.
That’s exactly how you know it IS the right url. : )
It’s quite glitchy and slow, but I like it anyway so far. Refreshing solves the issues most of the time.
They still haven’t learned, that those options have to be opt in. They are doing it again. Train the dataset un-rightfully while the law is to slow to go against those rules. Meta will have to pay a fine and nothing more. And the deed is done. The dataset is trained. make a copy from it an call it differently and no-one will ever know, where the data came from.
There’s also a notification in your Instagram account (go to your notification page). You have to click on it to see the update of Insta’s terms: a pop-up will be displayed, it will contain a link of a form (to optout of AI training).
If you lost it through many notifications, you can search online for the link of this form (it’s in Insta’s Help Center).
Once you submit the form, you receive an email confirming your action. Then an email that answers your request. Mine was accepted in barely 2 minutes.
Hope it heps! (and sorry for the message not being about Cara…)
OH. I’m sorry for this, I guess I didn’t make it clear - I did opt out. I followed someone’s guide from an Instagram post and found the form in the settings in my app. I still don’t like the fact I’m required to opt out and making allowing others to use my art for their own gain the default option.
After a brief look at CARA, I like the look and sound of it and might consider posting there. They have been having technological difficulties and it will be expensive to run so I really hope the guy who runs it gets a lot of support from people who can afford it. It incorporates Glaze as a limited option to protect your work from AI scraping but sadly if you post a lot, you will need to use an external glaze app. The creator of the site seems genuine and I trust his intent even though we cannot know what the future holds.
