Newbie asks for general advise on KRITA

Hello folks
I’m new to this community and to the world of drawing in general. I’m not an artist myself, but I want to create and illustrate my own little fairy tale. I have just started working on this project and would like to hear your opinion on Krita. Is it a good tool for me as a beginner to start with? I would like to create illustrations that resemble the old Disney films (e.g. Bambi), is this possible with Krita?
Thank you very much for your help.

This is possible with any drawing application. Although Krita’s interface may seem overwhelming at first. It’s very easy to get used to. And all the tools and brushes that come with the program are great.

In the community you can find dozens of free brush packs that can help you get that Disney movie style.

You can even do that in MS Paint, however probably a bit easier in Krita. What you can do in Krita painting/drawing wise is mostly only limited to your skill and how much you practice.

Welcome to the community, @InkAndFables.

If you decide to continue with Krita, be sure to bookmark this forum and come here often to learn and ask questions.

The search tool at the top right of the screen is quite good.

Anytime you can’t find an answer, make a new topic in one of the Support categories, and you’ll find lots of Krita users will try to help you out.

A post was split to a new topic: How can I use Krita?

Hello InkAndFables, Krita is definitely capable to do Disney like illustrations. You could even animate the whole Bambi movie in Krita, but who’s got time for that. My tip to get into drawing would be to practise on a seperate project / seperate paintings. Then you can learn and experiment how digital drawing works and how Krita works in general. I would encourage just trying things out. A lot of the stuff, for example many tools or brushes or options can be learned just by trying them out and see what happens  I would recommend a drawing tablet though, as with a mouse many brushes don’t work as intended

Thanks MaxMint. I tried Krita yesterday and for now it feels a bit overwhelming with all the different tools and brushes, but I guess practice makes perfect

You don’t have to use them all if you don’t want to
I’d suggest learning and concentrating on the ones that will be most useful for you, such as the drawing/painting tools and use of the Layers Docker.

The manual is useful and well written:
User Manual — Krita Manual 5.2.0 documentation

YouTube has many video tutorials of suitable for many levels of skill.
I’d suggest you try some of these, starting with the earlier ones’s first because they progress in skill level:

You can always come here to ask for advice about a particular tool or technique or general subject area.

If you have enough knowledge and practice about drawing and the Disney style, half of the problem is solved. Since Disney is heavily involved in animation, you will find better references on websites and blogs about the subject, such as the Living Lines Library.

To learn Krita, the quickest way is to take a course (which doesn’t stop you from learning by doing tutorials as well).
