Newbie Journey: Learning Digital Art, Manga & Anatomy with Krita

Hi everyone!

I recently started my digital art journey 3 days ago. I am a complete beginner, both in general drawing and digital art. I am using Krita with a pen display tablet.

My main goals are to learn Anime / Manga style and Anatomy. Since everything is new to me, I feel a bit overwhelmed and don’t really know where or how to start.

Do you have any advice or step-by-step roadmaps for absolute beginners? I would love to hear your favorite resources, tutorials, or tips for starting out in Krita!

Thanks a lot for your help!

Learning Krita, manga, and anatomy is a lot to learn - those are 3 separate skills. Give yourself time.

I would poke around YouTube for Krita tutorials. Because you’re new to digital art, stay away from tutorials written for other apps. It will be too confusing to figure out how to follow the steps.

Hello, I would like to help, especially as someone with intermediate knowledge in this field (except for Krita, who recently moved into it).

I can give you some information, but I can’t explain everything. Especially as someone accustomed to self-learning while simultaneously exploring many of Krita’s strengths in manga drawing (this isn’t my first time creating manga, but I’ve temporarily stopped for organizational reasons).:smiling_face_with_tear:

My advice is to start with the basics, like learning the software and how to use it, then learn digital art and anatomy, and finally manga drawing. (But if you want to learn digital art and manga at the same time, don’t make my mistake. Despite my extensive experience with digital art, when I started drawing manga, I found myself putting too much effort into focusing on unnecessary details. This is because I wanted everything to be perfect, even though manga isn’t art; it’s storytelling. Not everyone will focus on the type of brush used or the smallest details of a crumbling wall. Even though I know this, I still do the same thing every time and have to redo everything because the drawing becomes incomprehensible due to the excessive detail. We need to simplify things and focus on what’s important!):smiling_face_with_tear: :+1:

My usual advice to learn drawing (which is mostly ignored) is to start with perspective / incorporate it in the beginning.

Alongside painting skills, it gives a pretty straightforward way to increase your knowledge, build muscle memory and eye-hand coordination.

And Manga often have gorgeous perspective in it!

Anatomy is a good way to start too, but there are tons of internet resources to begin with, so just pick one that suits you.

Krita, I would learn organically - just while drawing you will discover tools, have questions and discoveries that will build up slowly for a knowledge base - Just do not hesitate to look into documentation!

Good luck!
