Nothing happens when I import an ABR file

I’ve been trying to follow multiple tutorials that show the brush editor window closing and then new brushes show up in the “predefined” tab. When I try to open an ABR file, the file window closes, and no new files are added to the menu, with the menu staying open. I have tried this with multiple ABR files but cannot get it to work. Any help is appreciated.

That’s a Photoshop brush you’re trying to load. You need Krita brushes.

Here’s a link to the resource section of this forum. Lots of brushes in there:

PS - Welcome to the forum.

From Photoshop brushes, so ABR’s (whereas ABR stands for Adobe Brush Resource), you can only use the (their) brush-tips in Krita, they do not show up among the original Krita Brush Presets. They are imported via Krita’s resource-management, which you will find in Krita under “Settings” >> “Manage Resource Libraries…”. After the import, you can assign these brush-tips to existing brush-presets, or you can create a whole new brush with them, the brush-tips these ABR’s contain show up in the brush editor, but not among the brush presets of Krita. In both cases, you have to find the right settings to mimic their behavior from Photoshop. It is not always easy to recreate such a brush, but it is also not impossible, and there are many examples out there.

Hello Michelist,

Thanks for the reply. The issue I am facing is that the .abr files are not being imported into Krita at all. In the video and article tutorials I have seen, the imported brush-tips are meant to be imported to the bottom of the predefined brush list. When I click open on an .abr file, the file window closes and nothing happens. This might be a bug or something that I am missing from my end.

As long as I’ve been using Krita regularly, ABR files have never been imported into the “Brush Preset Docker” in Krita, which I believe is called a “predefined brush list” from you. The brush tips contained in the ABR’s are imported into Krita without the settings that make a brush tip a brush in the first place. You can see the thumbnails of each brush tip in Krita’s brush editor, accessible via keyboard shortcut F5 or via its toolbar icon, these are ranked alphabetically. These brush tips are not visible in the brush presets in the “Brush Preset Docker”.
ABR’s can be imported up to a certain version of Krita, and as long as they are not corrupt or copy protected, respectively do not contain so-called artistic brushes. Brushes above this version can, however, be converted to a Krita-readable version using the abrMate software.

After the import of ABR-Files, the brush tips they contain are shown in the predefined tab of Krita’s brush editor.
You can assign these brush tips to an existing brush preset and use it as a new brush preset, this will be shown and can be found with the thumbnail you assigned to it while you saved this new brush, or, if you don’t save it, it is shown with the thumbnail of the brush preset you assigned the brush tip to. It will only hold the picture of the assigned brush tip when you have assigned this thumbnail while saving it as a new brush preset.
An unsaved brush preset + brush tip combination can be used a whole Krita session, but it is only temporary and will be reset to the brush preset you used as a base at the moment you close Krita. So don’t forget to save it if you want to preserve it.
