On Fedora Linux, when the display scaling is above 100%, the cursor icon on the canvas is offset.

This means that when I draw a brush stroke, pick a colour, or try to grab a transform handle, the cursor icon is about 1cm up and 1cm left of where the actual cursor is. So brush strokes appear offset, the colour picker looks like it’s sampling the wrong colour, and I often accidentally rotate a transform selection instead of scale it:

This happens:

  • With any display scaling value greater than 100% (I tested 150%, 175% and 200% and could reproduce the issues in all 3)
  • With Krita 5.2.15 in flatpak and appimage formats
  • With Krita 6.0 beta in appimage format
  • Only when I am drawing with the stylus. The cursor position is fine with a mouse or trackpad.

I have tried:

  • Checking my tablet’s settings. I only have 1 monitor, and the tablet is mapped to the whole area of the monitor with matching aspect ratio.
  • Trying OpenTabletDriver instead of the default GNOME tablet support. No improvement.
  • Turning off the setting “HiDPI support”. This doesn’t fix the problem (although it does make the UI tiny).

I haven’t tried switching to X11 because my system doesn’t support it (Fedora 43). I could try it in a virtual machine though.

I had hoped the migration to Qt6 would fix this, but unfortunately this bug is still present in Krita 6.0 beta.

Shall I log this as a bug?

I have no issues with my graphics tablet (Wacom) on Linux (CachyOS) with the app image and wayland (my screen’s scaling is at 150%). I don’t know how XP Pen works but have you tried re-calibrating the graphics tablet?

Other than the tablet calibration, you can try running the 6.0 AppImage with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland ./Krita-xyz.AppImage

That will make Krita use Wayland natively instead of going through XWayland. Although Gnome’s compositor is not supported, so your mileage may vary here.

Otherwise, trying a better window manager than Gnome or at least using it through a stable X11 interface is definitely the next course of action. Checking how other stylus-supporting programs behave would also probably help troubleshoot, such as GIMP, MyPaint and/or Drawpile.

This helps a lot, thank you! The cursor isn’t offset when running 6.0 with that ‘wayland’ environment variable set:

The cursor shape doesn’t change to a crosshair or a colour picker when I use the stylus. (It does change when I use a mouse). And there’s also no window bar.

BUT the cursor is in the right place and that’s good enough for me, especially seeing as GNOME isn’t supported yet. Thank you!

I should also mention I only have this cursor offset problem in Krita. GIMP and Drawpile are totally fine. And this tablet doesn’t have a display, so I don’t think I can really calibrate it.

Do you think the ‘wayland’ mode will be turned on by default in a future version?

I just realised that this problem appears to be solved under wayland because it stops the custom cursor from showing at all. Instead, it reverts to the system cursor when I use the stylus. Either way, good enough for now - thank you

“Not supported” just means Krita doesn’t get specifically tested on and doesn’t have special handling for Gnome’s compositor, nor are there current plans for that to change. If you don’t need stuff like color management, the general Wayland support should be enough though, in theory.

Wayland support will probably be enabled by default in the future in some capacity.

Various cursor problems happen on KWin as well I think, due to Wayland’s ridiculous behavior of giving each input device its own independent cursor. So that’ll probably get fixed at some point.

I’m pleased to report the cursor is no longer offset in Krita 6.0.3 in GNOME. This is when using my XP Pen Deco Gen2 XLW.

The correct cursor pointer is shown as well. The cursor is working perfectly with my tablet on GNOME. Thanks to all the contributors!
