Onion skin doesn’t work

Hi I have been animating for a while on other programmes and I decided to try out krita. I watched a tutorial, and It looked good but even when I do exactly what the tuto says, my onion skin is not there. I draw something, go the the next frame and create a blank key frame, and switch on onion skin, but the onion skin doesn’t show up. I’ve tried it on different layers, still same result.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Which version of krita and which operating system are you using?

Can you post a fullscreen screenshot (.png) with your animated layer, Layers docker, Timeline docker and Onion Skins docker visible?

Have you made sure that you’re painting your animation on a transparent paint layer?
Have you turned the onion skin on for the layer by clicking the lightbulb icon to the left of frame-0 of the layer in the Timeline?

Ahhh it was the lightbulb! Thank you!

Hello there! I wanted to try and animate in the newest version of Krita (version 4.3.0) and am trying to look for the lightbulb symbol where you access your animation layers, but it isn’t there.

Would I need to access the onion skin feature through settings --> dockers? Would it be in the Animation panel? I am all ears and thank you!

It’s never a good idea to add your problem/question to the end of another topic, especially a topic that’s been marked as ‘Solved’. It’s much better to create a new topic.

I suggest that you read this section of the manual:
https://docs.krita.org/en/user_manual/animation.html

You can also type ‘animation’ in the search box to get other relevant sections of the manual.

Don’t look at ‘Animation Curves’ for now, they’re a bit advanced and confusing.
You must paint your animation on a transparent layer, above the background layer, if you want to see the onion skins.
You won’t see the lightbulb icon until your layer is an animated layer then it’s to the left of frame-0.
Creating an animated layer is explained in the manual. Sadly, the manual is a bit out of date here and ‘New Frame’/‘Copy Frame’ are now called ‘Blank Frame’/‘Duplicate Frame’.
The Onion Skins docker is only for setting up the number of and properties of the onion skins. e.g colour, opacity. Once thats done to your liking you may as well close it because it only takes up space after that.

Excuse me but I have tried that and I’m on windows 4.4.0 I’d like some help
