Plucky Puffin

Plucky means having determined courage in the face of difficulties. Puffins are resilient. They must cope with harsh weather conditions, climate change & habitat loss.

I chose to give the Puffin a profession as a Sushi chef, wearing a fancy chef’s hat with intricate patterns, next to taking care of the little puffy pufflings. It takes a long time to be a chef. A puffin’s diet consists of a lot of fresh fish. It is a place in or near the ocean, the puffin’s element. Water clashes against basalt stones inspired by Iceland, a region where these birds live (next to, e.g., the UK, Norway, Greenland) while caring for their young ones.

In the center, the Plucky Puffin chef rolls the next meal with the sushi mat, nervously looking at the puffling that studies the menu, unsure what to order. The chef moves to the left side, checking if the “customers” are well cared for. Tuning the radio if the music frequency isn’t to everybody’s liking. I chose to give the radio a “compass frequency”.

Then the Puffin slides to the front right side, serving a hungry but happy puffling its order. Others are waiting for the last one to order or can’t hesitate to enjoy these delicacies. The table is set: natural wooden bowls, kitchen utensils, rice, wasabi, ginger, fresh fish, serving boards, a sesame seed shaker, and coral decorations. Everything is as cozy as possible to forget about the harsh world for as long as possible.

In the background, we can see a volcano erupting & thunder striking.

I love this piece! The volcano in the back definitely adds some pizazz😂 great job with the puffins!

I’m always happy to see your art - and it’s easy to recognize, you’ve got such a distinct style using these refined patterns. For me it means two good things: a great piece of art to enjoy, and an update for my favorite distro.
I can’t use your art for my desktop though. I’d spend all my time staring at it and would not get anything done.

I wonder if the people suggesting the codename ever think about you “having to” paint it. Sounds like a difficult task with the bird’s eyes looking so sad in real life. While the Ubuntu release will hopefully be a happy event.
But I think you made the best of it by developing this beautiful background story of an animal that shows motherly love and care for future generations in difficult times and environment…

I’m sorry you had the extra work. On Bluesky the alt-text character limit is 2,000. Hopefully, a Krita Artists account will be there, too. Twitter/X lost so many users…

No worries at all, @SylviaRitter. Asking artists for alt-text is a new thing for me - I didn’t know there was any kind of character limit.

2,000 characters is one more reason to love Bluesky.
