Learning how to not be tied by reference or in this case lack of reference. Design of course is already there since this is fanart, but building figure from scratch is much harder than I thought and trying to draw correct lighting is even harder.

True! 
It was shocking transition for me from drawing something I could see to drawing my own illustration from scratch. I get why fundamental theories are so important now.

I agree. It’s very more challenging to paint from imagination and get good lighting. Maybe it will get easier for us with practice.
