Practice #1 - Landscape Digital Painting

Hello! Beginner artist here. Got a hard time painting this image I took somewhere in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, Philippines.

Felt like something’s amiss. Any ways to improve this painting? Feel free to present your comments, suggestions, or constructive criticisms. I really want to get better with digital arts and I know, I’m in the right community.

Thanks!

I think you’ve improved on the photo by making the mountains bigger and framing the people in the water by the tree a little more. Maybe the thing that’s bothering you is that the focus is all on the left side - maybe that makes the right side of the painting seem empty. I don’t see that as a problem. But if you look again and decide you don’t like the emptiness of the right, maybe a swirl of water might help? Or maybe the clouds could reflect a little more strongly there.

I feel the mountains in the background are a little too dark and have too much color, same goes for the trees. If you want to make them seem further away, you want them to have low contrast and have a light blue-ish color over them.

you can find some good resources online for atmospheric perspective or aerial perspective

I really like what you did with the size of the mountains. On the far trees, perhaps the light areas could be broken up a bit so that it doesn’t appear as a line across the top. Well done, though.

Thanks! Now that you’ve said it, it really feels empty in that area. Maybe because we are used to read things left to right and we are expecting something during the process. I’ll surely take note of these pointers. Thanks for the advices!

Thanks for noticing it kynlo. I really have a lot to learn.
And by the way, the video you shared was very informative. I forgot to observe how things work in the real world.
Again, Thank you so much!

Thanks Sooz!
Yeah! I forgot to break those up. It looks fake the longer you look at it.
