So having to work with clients and their PSD files I’ve come across a number of compatibility issues which I’d like to share:
When you export to PSD while all layers are stacked into one group, it actually merges the group into one layer (bug?)
Inherit alpha isn’t compatible
More than one transparency mask on a layer isn’t compatible (it will flatten the layer) (or maybe photoshop doesn’t have that option at all?)
When exporting PSD, it will unfold all group layers. So when you have lots of group layers, you will have a long list of layers. Makes it difficult to find certain layers
Luckily there are workarounds for all of these points, but… it’d be great to see any of these implemented in the future
There will be a new inheritance mode in krita for inheriting from a single layer below (like PS clipping mask).
It will be used when opening a PSD and you will be able to use these to save a valid PSD. Current inheritance will still be available, but if you plan to export to PSD - those will not be supported as Photoshop don’t have a feature like this.
Yes this is unique to krita, No other software that I know has multiple mask feature. So psd doesn’t know what to do with it it will flatten it I guess. Multiple mask should give you the warning before saving to psd if it doesn’t do it already, we can request to add this warning.
This might be a bug. We should report it as it flattens and results in data loss.
I agree this is annoying, I have done this layer folding unfolding dance quiet a few times. But I think there is no issue for the client or person who has photoshop.
I couldn’t reproduce this in latest Krita appimage from the nightly build I made several layers added them into one group and saved as psd and then opened it in GIMP to check all layers were intact. Is there any other way to reproduce this?
Aah my bad, I did not see the UI but I couldn’t reproduce this. I opened the file without issue in GIMp my GIMP is beta version can you try that and check if this is already fixed in GIMP?
@SchrodingerCat
you need to test that with a psd file that was created in a given software. if you work with a PSD created in Krita and export out will give a different result from a PSD created in PS and exported from Krita.
It really is something that happens on the moment of creation of the PSD file that makes all go weird.
Yes, of course I understand that, the detail is that this is a bug that only happens if you put all the layers in a group.
If I export to psd leaving a layer outside the group it doesn’t happen, I mean I don’t usually do that but one day by mistake I did it, then I noticed the problem, it’s something that shouldn’t happen, if someone else makes that mistake they probably don’t know what it’s because of.
I made a psd in krita, all layers including the starting one in the same group. Both
photoshop and csp opened it fine. I am using the krita prealpha so maybe it is fixed in 5.3?
As for the rest of the post, I’m also interested in the clipping mask feature coming to Krita since it’s very tiring to be using Gimp, especially on many layers and groups.
This bothers me too, I think it’s a bug, I don’t know if it’s reported.
