I was really amazed by the phone and the laptop they released but I have not heard anything good about their support. Many people who had booked the phone haven’t yet the got phone or the refund and I have seen this quiet often.
Just search for purism refund and you will see what I mean. As much as i really want a linux tablet since i travel a lot. I won’t find confidence in buying these and being in india it means paying the export / import tax which is even more crazy.
I really like this initiative. It’s good to see this type of devices around more and more in the Gnu/Linux community and coming with styluses. I remember speaking about my dream of a device like that with their CEO Todd Weaver at Swatantra in 2017, so you know: I’m super motivated!
(Disclaimer: I worked for Purism as an external illustrator. They also sponsored me a laptop back in 2018 after I lost all my computers at home in a burglary. It’s a hardware I loved. I still have it as a collector item, because my mobile solution now is my Lenovo Yoga 370. Well, I have a biais as I know all the effort they put and their real passion for FLOSS and hardware.)
But back to this Librem 11. For me, the design of the spec: a CPU (Intel N5100 (Jasper Lake) @ 1.1GHz. 4 Cores, 4 Threads, up to 2.89GHz) coupled with a weird ratio monitor (11 inch quad HD monitor 2560×1600) with Intel UHD Graphics… meh, it smells at a first glance and without testing:
Lag while painting in Krita because the CPU is not strong enough for this resolution.
Difficulties to connect the device to an external HDMI projector (1920x1080, 16/9) because of the ratio.
No idea of the Goodix GXTP7380 digitizer; but I see the stylus has tilt, a lot of pressure and it is a AES tech (Active Electromagnetic Stylus, afair the accronym). So, it might be not as good as a Wacom Cintiq or XPPenArtistPro passive EMR tech (resonnance, battery less) but at the same time, I know some good painting session and drawing session in AES with my Lenovo Yoga 370 combined with the Wacom Bamboo ink plus. The stylus is USB chargeable, that’s great, but I can’t see any side button on the first marketing shot; meh.
But on another hand, I know that Purism has in-house François Téchené (Product Director) who is a brilliant Krita animator. So I’m pretty sure we will see some drawing or painting demo sooner or later, and it can be a very good news if he was involved into the beta testing of prototypes because he knows about the constrains, the lag, and can compare with Wacom Cintiq. I’m also sure the ratio issue can have a software workaround; involving a remapping of coordinate of the stylus on change of ratio (something that both Gnome and KDE can’t do right now, except on X11 if you tweak xsetwacom with the good area coordinate and come up with a xrandr script that trigger an xsetwacom script… pretty long to setup).
On my side, I’ll try to get my hands on one and see how it is build. I’m curious about their stylus and the quality of the overlay sheet. The infographics on the website looks good anyway. If the full combination is really well done, it can justify the price tag. I know Purism is often around at the Capitole du Libre event in Toulouse (around end November). I hope they’ll have a prototype this year I can test. If they do, I’ll bring my camera and record something for my video channels.
Sweet memories :). it was fun event and Todd seemed really passionate about the project. I had asked him about availability in India but it is still a hassle to get it unless I import it.
I have less faith in AES because they are suspected to produce wobbly line. Wonder if they could have somehow gone amd way. But i am sure they are saving much on soc
