I have just recently got into digital media , i have used krita for 2 months and i’m lovin it!
The only thing i don’t understand is the smudge tools/brush it seems like they don’t work like when you smudge with charcoal with your fingers in paper, in krita the paint/brush stroke just goes blurry and doesn’t work the way i want.
Anyway i can make it do like steve huston does in this video with his finger (timestamp 22:45) https://youtu.be/p7J5Zr9JsPk?t=1366
By default, the smudge brushes are very digital. If you’re interested in charcoal-like effects, check out Ramon’s video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9wtk5BWtC0 – it comes with a template for .kra files and a brush preset pack.
Smudge brush isn’t too easy to deal with.
I guess that in brush editor (F5) you would have to disable color rate (so it’s only smudging and not adding any color), drop opacity very much to like 20% (the smudging on the video is very subtle)
To avoid blurring I would check “pattern” and pick one that looks like charcoal on paper, and in its “options” tab pick “Subtract alpha”. Then you will not blur dark pixels on the texture and you should get a kind of patterned blur.
It may require lots of tweaking the options in the pattern settings as well as the smudge brush itself (which as I said is quite complex in general)
Thanks you @halla Really fantastic tools and brushes he made, i will play around them !
@wojtryb Thanks for the help ! i played around with the settings you mentioned i got to test them out it isn’t the best but it is much better than what i started with ! will keep playing with them until i get close to it
Glad to hear that.
There are quite a lot of parameters to tweak there, so maybe you’ll find a way to get closer to what you actually need. Maybe you’ll find some hints and solutions in the set mentioned by Halla.
