Random stuff, sketch etc

Usually kids coloring books are the best for that. They have all of the pop culture types. I’ve the adult artists add the line art before actually coloring them.

Ah I should have saved the scene in a more beginner friendly state…at the top right of the viewport, enable “Show Overlays” so you can actually see the rig. A finished rig usually makes the body meshes unselectable in viewport so you can’t accidentally rip your character apart, but I still need to work on them…(eventually, when I have some motivation)

In Pose Mode you can rotate the ‘root’ bone (that’s the big circle on the ground with 4 arrows). And since the body is parented to the rig, you can also just rotate the entire rig in Object Mode (that’s what I did).

@Lynx3d thank you for the explanation. I will look more into how the rigging work.

I think I can detect constraints for cheekbones placement much better now

Drawing lines is super hard for me. There are other subskill in drawing that is hard for me to understand, but lineart is both hard for me to understand and hard for me to physically do. If artist like Peter Han, Trent Kaniuga and Mr Kim didn’t say that they also find it hard and still make mistakes even at their skill level I’d probably quit.

Almost had to do surgery for my right hand to the point I had to change tools like mouse (to vertical type) and add small keyboard with knobs so my right hand don’t have to move much. I also built my own tablet stand. Even now it is still prone to injury, idk if it is just me or other people also experience it.

Maybe I just don’t know safety precaution when drawing. But I did my research and the only thing that I can think of is either my hand is too weak, or I do excessive gripping, or I draw for too long in the early days of me learning.

there are 8 corners in a box, I think the key is to know the depth correlations between those corner points to each other and also to the viewer eye.

edit:
different box make you see from different perspective. Even slightly, it means you will draw different curves, different angle for straight lines and different tapering on parallel lines.

edit:

very hard to imagine the shading and the lines, and the frustration comes from the knowledge that I know I am much faster when trying to do partial copy from a ref. But I also know that this is not a futile effort since my brain start to adapt by making smaller range for possible constraints, means accuracy is getting higher even though speed is still slow. I am still at the phase at making sure things are right.

You know, me ,it’s the fortune for others to have the ability to gather/make their own ref, don’t get envious of others even when the long manual way is the one you have to walk. Who knows you might learn something entirely new because you walk different path.

I screw up with the face again, and can’t backtrack

I don’t even know anymore, if I can’t figure out what’s wrong I can’t continue.
This is the ref by miss Kallisi
1:16 is the closest I think, then it just spiraled into cuts and redraw for 30 minutes, especially the jawline

Edit:
I really need to draw faceless stuff. I need to draw a reflection of a bottle or something

Tried to fix it the best I could

Yeah same. I got carpal in my right hand so bad I had to learn how to use the mouse with my off hand. Once I split mouse duties between my hands, took regular breaks and really focused on good ergonomics; it started to get better but it was a slow process. Hope you find what’s dragging your hand down.

Stopped early in second session because my hand start hurting

Sorry was too lazy to create new file. I was trying to continue the space marine sketch at first, but I was even more lazy to actually do calculations than doing observation drawing.

This is incredible work. Process video was also very interesting and entertaining.

At first, I thought you were going to paint the fruit then take inspiration from the fruit and implement the inspiration on to the mega suit sketch in the back and make like a Dragon Fruit themed mega bot. :joy: Honestly, that might look sick.

@TBs_thename Thank you. I’ll consider doing that for coloring practice, I think it will be a good test to see if I can detach color variable from an object and put it on other stuff. Rinotuna, one of the artist I look up to done a series on IG of taking everyday item as the base for his character design.

It is still hard for me to make things look lit by light source, the tendencies of shallow flatter shading is still very hard. Even when I can shade well when using a ref, once it is removed the confidence immediately gone. It’s been like this for more than half a decade.

On the other side of my life. I did my first repair job after my hand was badly injured, simple broken monitor and RAM upgrade job and some apps clean up. It’s a bit hard with how my right hand lose some of its strength but still doable. I made some simple 3Dprint to help me disassemble the computer easier, like little prybars, and connector grip. Used the payment to buy actual good food.

2 days just to make her smile. It’s kinda frustrating for me to see many cosplays photo I see are too casual, only cool and serious expression, or just sexy stuff. I always imagine a proper live action photoshoot, but that would cost a fortune most cosplayers can’t afford, I think. Now if only I can paint an entire scene from scratch.

Awesome, looking forward to it.

Good nutrition makes a world of difference for both physical recovery and mental. Glad to see you are prioritizing this.

Hope your hand gets to feeling better soon!

Even though I can read contrast from an image, creating my own is a whole new kind of skill I haven’t mastered yet.

edit:
I tried to analyze why I can’t shade with better contrast. My theory is this is similar to how young musician can learn perfect pitch/absolute pitch detection, but the one who learn late can only detect pitch relative to recent sound note (I only heard about this, I have no clue about music). But I also think that I am too scared to make the light and dark level difference bigger. Since Yor has dramatic lighting, I need to be brave, and maybe find a ref with similar condition and not just theorize the outcome because my brain can’t discern value level well without ref, just like recent Aerith.

Reference, face ref is miss Sora (Sayathefox)
Paint over… even just trying to follow the existing lighting the shading still quite weak

There might not too much changes happen, but it’s not about what changes but the fact I made my own decision on what’s wrong and how to fix it. I’ll continue after I give my hand a bit of rest. Left one is the new one btw. Hair still need fixing so bad, but I could see the fault in the old one’s perspective. Remember a curve can be drawn opposite what it suppose to look depending on the viewing angle.

Found the original reference for Frieren. I forget where I put the file but I guess pinterest re-recommend the cosplay image in my homepage

Oh I remember that one!

The face now definitely better matches the whole head and eyes which suggest she’s not facing straight at the viewer. And it also gives a lot more the impression of looking at her from rather close distance, those small changes definitely make a difference!

And she looks more happy too

I think I know why my shading is weak without reference.

I did several test, but I need to do more just to be sure.

Ref is slightly from below, I drew it slightly from above.

Looks like a solid foundation to me. Although I’ve heard from several artists unless you’re going for ultra realism there’s always room to adjust the shape of a shadows and highlights to help show off the 3d aspect of the subject.

yea this is constant adjustments. Problem is and always the target for the shading, if I am not sure how it is suppose to look, doesn’t care how much shading technique or advance process I know, I still won’t know which one to apply and by how much. With clear ref, the target for the shading is obvious. This has ref but I rotate it to train the way I rotate things in my mind

I am gonna ask permission for the ref, so people will know how much change I made. Not much in grand scheme of things but enough to make it hard for me to imagine how the shading would be when I do rotation.

edit:
My brain heats up like crazy but I know this helps me picking up shading steps pattern just by a glance when looking at something. I think the key is to train my ability to “de-evolutionize” complex form into the more basic ones.

Don’t worry, I create backup.

Edit:
I think I overstayed my welcome, didn’t get reply for the reference perm. I think I’ll just redraw it, shouldn’t be too long.
