Recording and storing

I wanted to start this thread with a personal story/rant: I’ve often wanted to record the process of one of my drawings in Krita, but currently, the recording system in Krita is impractical and unintuitive (for me), because I need to download a secondary application to finally be able to record. Not to mention that you need to activate a docker instead of having a shortcut button for this (which would be much better and faster).

As a former IbisPaint user, I miss having my drawing processes already recorded by the program, being able to revisit the processes and having the possibility of downloading the speedpaint of the drawing I want.

In Procreate, being able to slide across the video bar to see a step/phase of the art priece is a feature that really appeals to me, and it’s very intuitive and practical.

With that in mind, I suggest Krita should have both features, plus a shortcut to review the process if desired. I’ll explain it in more detail below how that could work:

  1. Krita automatically records the process of every art piece, but you can choose to download the recording or not.
  2. Without needing to download the recording, you can preview the recording, with the ability to fast-forward or rewind and stop at the section you want to pause.
  3. To access the features above, there would be a shortcut along with other Krita tools, such as text, selection, etc., for easy access and without needing to activate a docker. The icon could be a small camera or a film reel.

This is an idea I’ve had lately since I started using Krita in March. Having intuitive and practical tools is something I really appreciate, Krita has been wonderful so far, but I miss features like this, so I can review old processes and see my progress in practice.

This is my first time on the forum too so… hi guys! :]

Hi @nesquikmofado

Welcome to the forum. Please feel free to vote for your feature request.

(Assuming non-Android) You don’t have to download a secondary application to record your work painting process.

You can already set Krita to automatically record every painting.

You need a docker to somehow configure how it should work. If it’s not a docker it’s somewhere else but it has to be at some place. Have you checked the shortcut settings for recording start/stop already?

There is nothing to download from Krita. Krita runs locally (isn’t a web app) and every recording immediately exists on the computer as soon as it happens (even though not rendered into a video yet), this is simply how computers work. So, you can not have a recording feature without the files being stored somewhere until you download them from Krita (whatever that means).

Oh heavens… Well, let’s just say that I ended up reading this part of the Krita guide wrong (my dyslexia got the best of me, I’m so sorry lol).

I ended up thinking that “ffmpeg” was a secondary application and NOT a file type…

I feel a little silly rn. I appreciate your help, really.

FFmpeg is a secondary application - but it is already integrated into Krita.
FFmpeg is not a file type, it is probably the most powerful tool-set out there to handle audio, video and picture¹ content, nearly every application that works with video and/or audio utilizes FFmpeg under the hood without you even knowing, even Procreate and Ibis Paint will very probably do so too, because why invent the wheel again if you can use an already existing wheel that is being optimized for decades?

¹ okay, for pictures ImageMagick is the most powerful but only for pictures

I have. It’s called Record Timelapse. I’ve set it to Alt+Space and it works
