My technical art skills are solid enough, but I really would like a big illustrated book of different figures particularly with an eye to musculature in different poses. Of course there’s a ton of references online but I find it much more effective and comfortable to study from a physical paper book.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
You can always print out online and cd images for use away from the computer , you can even enlarge them first ![]()
That said there are a lot of books of photographic references, any of the Eadweard Muybridge photographic references are good " The Male and Female Figure in Motion" " The Human Figure in Motion" " Muybridge’s Complete Human and Animal Locomotion" etc.
Any of the “Art Models” series of books, they are collections of photographic nude and clothed, male and female, figure poses, there are 75 books in the series:
The individual hardcovers, 20-30 images, are $25-$50, the collection books, 200 images plus a cd, are around $200. You can get them used for a 1/4 to 1/2 the new price and books with the cd have 360° views of each pose on the cd. The pictures in the ones I had were about 8"x10".
My copy of " Anatomy for Artists: A visual guide to the human form" got a lot of use, it’s a combination of photos and drawings. It also has good musculature drawings combined with photos:
That’s a start for you at least ![]()
