Request: After "save new brush preset", activate the new preset

As per the subject, I think the expected behaviour when saving as a new brush preset in the brush editor is to keep editing the new preset, not the one it was based on. Right now, the workflow is odd, because to make a new brush preset you have to:

  • Save new brush preset, and create an icon for it
  • Activate the new brush preset
  • Make any changes you want
  • Overwrite brush preset, creating a new icon now that you actually have a brushtip you can use for it.

Any reason it should be how it is now?

While I find editing the new preset a bit weird (though I can see how it can happen/be part of a workflow), I found it totally understandable that you’d like to use the newly created brush, so it should be activated after creation, yeah.

Agree, it would be good tweak.

I tend to do one of two things:

  • actively decide I’m going to create a new brush, and therefore start by saving a new brush preset to work on
  • tweak an existing brush until it turns out it has become a new brush that I should save.

In both cases, I’m probably going to take some time while painting to settle on the precise details of the brush. So in both cases, I really need to remember to switch to the new preset before trying to tweak it - and I never do! I actually wrote this request up because I accidentally found myself editing the wrong preset because of not remembering this, and then immediately did the same thing again after writing this!

Glad you agree though, hopefully it’s not a big fix.

“Save New Brush Preset” should be renamed “Save Copy of Brush Preset” if this behaviour is not changed (minimal effort also). It’s misleading since traditionally in most applications “Save As…” means the document or file you just saved becomes active.

Having just made a bunch of changes to one of my main brushes and realizing now I need to overwrite that one or lose all my changes, but if I overwrite it I will now need to re-add the “new” brush (my original brush) back to my favourites and set it as one of ten brushes. :sleepy:

Edit: This behaviour seems to also effect overwriting a brush with the same name, it seems to still create a new brush which requires re-adding to favourites and setting in 10 hotkeys. For example when you want to set a new icon and ovewrite with the same name it does this.
