Why focus on improving Guides? They are ESSENTIAL for carefully aligning elements of your documents. From a character artist’s perspective you cannot ask for a more useful tool when ensuring a consistency of height and proportion in a character turn around. The user anticipates convenience for such a pivotal tool.
Proposal:
Add a button to reset/remove ALL guides, and (Optionally) a button to save and a button to open guides in the Guides section of the Grid and Guides docker.
(Optionally) Make it a menu item in View/Reset Guides in the Guides section.
Current work around:
"Click on the guide you want to remove and drag it outside of the canvas area . When you release your mouse or stylus, the guide will be removed. "
That is a click and drag for potentially hundreds of guides that the user has set up. We can make it better. One click versus as many guides as there on the document.
There is some history of people reaching out for this feature:
2019:
Other FOSS applications contain this feature as an example:
It’s possible in GIMP: “You can remove the guides with the Image → Guides → Remove all Guides command.” It’s also been possible in the most popular paid alternative to Krita for a while now: To remove all guides , choose View > Guides > Clear Guides.
Here are examples where Krita already has this functionality for other kinds of guide based items;
Thus it would make sense to make it consistent for Ruler Guides
More advice and feedback related to Guides to come.
My MR got accepted as raghukamath linked so the delete button will be added in the nightly build when that comes back.
For the optional requests a button to save and a button to open guides in the Guides section of the Grid and Guides docker. I think this is a good idea and should be added. I briefly looked at assistant preview saves and it looks fairly straight foward (just saving/reading an xml).
For Make it a menu item in View/Reset Guides in the Guides section. honestly I am not really a fan of adding that. I think all the actions in that menu are just setting options from a list or a toggle. Adding a delete in there I think is counter-intuitive to how the rest of the menu behaves. Maybe better would be to add a toolbar action or a shortcut?
Maybe the shortcut can be just to the right of the seamless button or mirror tool on the toolbar?
I did a search and the following shortcuts are available, ‘Show Guides’ (shift-g?), AND ‘Reset Guides’ (alt-g?)
Except for lock guides, and this may require a new thread… with ‘Lock Guides’ this wouldn’t create so many clicks if the user were just able to pull guides down no matter the lock state, just not edit them. As long as the rulers were up, makes sense right? Because the user is impeded by trying to draw unless the guides are locked, but won’t usually make use of the rulers except to pull down guides. So if a user is unhappy with that new behaviour they just hide the rulers too.
I am not sure if guides button would be generally useful enough to be default in the toolbar. Although I think adding it as an option for the toolbar is fine (in the settings → configure toolbar).
I think there are pro’s and cons to this. I could also see it be very annoying if you accidentally create a guide by clicking close to the edge. And it would then take many clicks to get rid of it. I think maybe better as a separate request and if many people vote/chime in for it it could be added.
