"Save Me" - Freddie Mercury and Brian May Artwork

It’s been a while and I’ve been quite busy. As the year is almost over, I think I can proudly say, that this is my favourite drawing I’ve done in 2025.

Some info about the portrait:

It’s November 24th again and this year marks 34 years since Freddie’s passing. However, 10 years prior to November 24th 1991 Queen performed in Montreal. It is quite strange to watch this concert, knowing what was still to come exactly one decade later.
Nonetheless, it is a fantastic experience to watch this wonderful show and see all of the band member in their prime - especially Freddie. So I found it quite fitting to draw a portrait inspired by said concert.
This moment is taken right before Brian starts to play the chords to “Save Me”. I’ve always been very fond of that song, a perfect mixture between a ballad and rock anthem. Due to the crisp clean video quality of the Rock Montreal recording the song also stands out visually in nice golden hues surrounded by rainbow lense flares.
I’ve attempted to capture this exact moment between Brian and Freddie, where they lean on each other and wait for the other’s sign - “let’s go!”. I do think this captures the onstage atmosphere between the two rock legends quite well - both equally talented musicians in a slightly surprising setting with Brian sat at the piano.
Moreover, I think that this specific song - Save Me - very well represents what today’s date means.
.
So to all the lovely people out there, I hope you stay safe.

Thank you very much! I agree, it’s been decades but the music continues to live on.

Amazing art. Your initial construction sketch is really clean, too. My favorite bit is the rimlight / halo around them, which makes me think of the energy Freddie had on stage.

Thank you for your lovely comment! I usually struggle quite a lot with the initial sketch so I end up having to do lots of corrections throughout the progress. But for this drawing I really spent a lot of time on the sketch so I’m quite happy that it looks clean. Yes, the rimlight, I only decided to include it last minute but I think it’s a nice finishing touch. It definitely echos Freddie’s stage presence.
