Saving brush settings?

My laptop is having some Windows 10 issues and I have been told I need to reinstall Windows 10. I have my brushes in Krita all tweaked the way I like them and I will have to reinstall Krita after I reinstall windows 10. Can I save the brush settings and reimport them after the new install??

@gmckay60 if your laptop has a USB port you should be able to save your brushes and any other important data to a USB stick.

Open Krita and go to settings - manage resources. Near the bottom of that panel you’ll see “open resource folder.” Click that and you should see a folder “paintoppresets.” In that folder you should see your brush files with the names you gave them. All you need to do is copy those brush files to the USB stick. Make sure you don’t lose the “_” character in the file names.

When you’ve reinstalled W10 and Krita. Use Krita’s resource manager to open the resource folder. Open “paintoppresets” and copy your brushes from the USB stick to “paintoppresets.” Restart Krita and your brushes should be in the “all” group.

Perfect!!
Thank you!!

Don’t only copy paintoppresets, copy the whole folder with all the brushes, palettes, etc. to have all resources backed up. Best way is to go “up” one folder and then copy a whole krita folder to your USB.

Thank you!

@gmckay60 you’re welcome.

@tiar Can I also copy/replace that entire folder on my second/backup machine?

Thanks!

,oh and to ‘restore’ the backup I’d need to use the Resources tool inside Krita?

No, for backing up and restoring, you just just copy and paste/replace folders. Just make sure you don’t replace something you want to back up :wink: Krita resource tools work on one specific folder (which location you can set up in Configure Krita), and adds/removes resources from that folder. It doesn’t have anything to back up or restore the entire folder yet. (Except for changing the resource folder location but it’s not really that good for backing up, only for having multiple resource folders if you wish, or having it in non-standard location).

That seems to make sense…let me ask more specifically. If I want my second/backup machine to have the same brushes/resources/etc then I can just copy the entire krita folder from my main computer to the backup computer?

Yes and also copy the ‘kritarc’ and ‘kritashortcutsrc’ configuration files over to the appropriate locations to keep the ‘look and feel and behaviour’.

If the other computer has a monitor with a notably different size or aspect ratio, you may want/need to adjust your workspaces to get them to your liking again.

Great! Thanks! I actually just tested copying the entire krita folder and it seemed to work…I did notice the difference in the workspace as the screen is standard HD while my main computer is 4K…but yeah…all is good!

Thank You!
