Hello! I’m just starting with Krita, and art programs in general. No experience at all beyond just messing around. I’m working with a fairly old Windows laptop and a mid-size Huion video tablet.
My first goal is learming how to use layers and creating comic book type illustrations.
I’m specifically going to try to emulate the style of the original black and white Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book.
I’m just looking for an easy process to apply Screentone effects for shading and accent a/special effect areas (I think it’s Screentone?).
Either variously spaced dots or 45 degree angled lines.
I don’t even know if that would consist of a custom brush or select and fill or some other process. The faster the better.
Thank you all for your help. It’s good to find a supportive community like this.
Hi @Paul_Schaefer ,you can install and try this bundle.
You will find many screentone brushes along with other fx brushes inside bundle.
That Moo bundle is good.
You can use halftone filters:
I don’t know how you’re setting your image up, a quickish way may be to mask the flat colour areas beneath your linework/ inking, add a new paint layer above your flats & shade with brush in there, then you can make a halftone filter so you have an editable screentone-like layer to adjust to your liking.
@Grum999 shows a good quick halftone demo here for reference:
I kept searching, and eventually found a scan of the actual Duotone line pattern used by the Turtles artists in studio.
Scans are available as .psd files, so I’m not sure if they are compatible or translatable to Krita.
So now I’m going to learn how to use this to make brushes, in both left and right orientation, so just mirrored.
And then I just need to figure out the correct scale/spacing between lines so it looks good at a standard comic book size.
In the actual comic, the lines are super close, so it looks practically like a gray ink wash.

You’ve uploaded a photo of someone’s comic book artwork.

8. Post Only Your Own Stuff
You may not post anything that belongs to someone else without permission. The exception is reference images, in which case every attempt should be made to credit the artist or photographer by name. In all cases a link to the image owner’s website must be included.
Unless you have permission, that image can not remain on the forum.
If you do have permission then you need to provide a link to where that image can be downloaded from and to also demonstrate that you do have permission.
You can provide links to any website that shows examples of the artist’s work if you’re unable to show that you have permission and are unable to provide a link to where the original image can be downloaded from.
Please deal with this matter as soon as possible.
Edit:Add: Thank you for removing that image.
I usually use the Halftone Filter in Krita, because it allows you to match the resolution of your image and adjust the rest from there. For a gritty look to the lines, I create a Fill Layer using one of the rough paper-like patterns included with Krita, then apply the Halftone filter to that layer. To remove the white of the layer, either set the layers blend mode to Multiply or add another Filter Layer using the Colors to Alpha option (with white selected). Duplicating the Fill Layer (which will duplicate the filter layers attached to it) will allow you to change the Halftone layers line angle for cross hatching. The attached image is an example of this.
Admins please note, this image is my own artwork.
