Second Beta for Krita 5.2.0 Released - please help by testing and reporting bugs!

Yeah, you should report it, or I can report it later when I have time. Either way, that’ll keep it from being forgotten about.

Opened 474431 – Logging to Log Viewer docker hangs with multiple windows open

Thanks!

I’ve been testing the latest Beta release hoping to see an end to this problem. Just experienced it again.
Here’s my best description of the problem: I’ve been getting these random momentary user interface hiccups where the entire user interface just stops functioning. No button anywhere on the UI works. A complete stoppage of any functionality. This UI “stoppage” lasts for about 15-20 seconds then magically comes back to life. No data lost. Just can’t use any function of Krita for a moment.

What I can say is… this seems to always happen when I am doing something in the layers docker. Just jumping from one layer to another will sometimes trigger this behavior. It’s doing this across multiple projects and also past versions of Krita. It’s been going on for a long time. I’ve seen similar complaints from others from time to time. I can’t reproduce the problem accurately. It just happens from time to time. I can always count on multiple instances of the problem in any Krita project I am working on. Luckily it’s nothing more than a momentary annoyance. If it was worse than that I would have bailed on Krita long ago. Please help!

I am using Windows 11 Pro with the following hardware:

Asus Prime x299-Deluxe II motherboard
Intel i9-9820X CPU (10 cores)
32GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 memory
EVGA GeForce GT 1030 SC graphics card
Samsung 960 PRO NVMe M.2 512GB drive (WIndows installed on this drive)
Crucial M500 SATA 120GB SSD (usually work on Krita projects from this drive)
2) Western Digital HDDs 1TB each used for data storage only
Huion Kamvas 22 GS2202 pen display

Thank you for testing the 5.2 beta, @larrycross. Your topic has been moved into the thread where all 5.2 testing results are gathered. We want to make it easier for the devs to find all related comments.

awesome thanks Sooz!

Have you checked if it is auto saving during the slow downs ?

Auto-Save is set to 2 minutes. This other problem happens maybe once or twice an hour. Also it’s not a slow down, it’s a complete full-on stop of all functionality.

I should add a little something though. I’ve also seen complete shut-downs. Where the entire Krita app just disappears from view. A complete shut down. Those are less common than the “Krita Komas” lol and to date, I’ve not noticed any lost work when restarting Krita. That would be an even worse situation.

I would like to add: I’ve never seen anything like this with any other app I use. This PC was built for multi-track recording. I can recording 20+ channels of 24 bit/48kHz audio simultaneously and mix upwards of 100 tracks of audio with this machine. I never saw anything crash or momentarily stop in the middle of work before. Krita is the only app where I’m seeing anything remotely like this.

And I’ll repeat: I only see the coma when I’m in the layer docker. If that happened in the middle of a pen stroke (for example) I wouldn’t know what to make of it. There’s something going on with the layers docker. I’m confident of that.

Is your canvas very large and/or do you have a large number of layers/groups?
Do you have a large number of clone layers?
Or, does this happen with even small and simple documents?

Are you doing anything in particular in the Layers docker?

Layer count in the current project = 20
Which is slightly larger than usual.
Nothing grouped
I have to admit I don’t know if the number of layers is a factor. I could try something simple with 2 or 3 layers and see what happens. I would imagine the less layers, the less likely the problem would occur for no other reason than I’m not spending time in the layers docker.
These projects are simple in terms of layers - each layer is usually a separate color (skin, hair, eyes, lips, clothes, background, etc.). Sometimes just a small amount of color. I can’t imagine anything capable of bringing this system to a standstill. And why just the user interface freezing up? And then returning to normal 20 seconds later? A total crash would actually make more sense but that happens very rarely.

When I’m working with a larger layer count, I’m usually switching back and forth between layers (that involves some scrolling up and down obviously). I’ll work on the eyes for a bit. Then switch over to the lips or hair. Then maybe the hands. In any given hour I’m switching around. The instant where I notice the problem it’s usually where I’ve just clicked on a different layer to start working on it. That’s all it takes. I’m not doing anything weird or fancy. My projects are fairly simple. I tend to work at 300 dpi. Typical canvas size is in the 2000 x 2000 range, Some smaller some larger.

Hi, I am not sure if this is a bug or something wrong with my computer memory, when I try to select the multi-brush feature, Krita lags for a moment, then closes.

My laptop is a Huawei D15 laptop, Intel(R) Core™ i5-10210U CPU @ 1.60GHz 2.11 GHz
8GB RAM, 64-bit operating system, Windows 11

This issue first occurred when I was working on a comic page with 5016 x 3541 pixels dimensions, but I have tried with a blank, newly-created canvas with size 1024 x 1024 and there is still the exact same issue.

It was a bug which is fixed now. it was discussed here in this thread check the reply Second Beta for Krita 5.2.0 Released - please help by testing and reporting bugs! - #164 by freyalupen

I have an update. I started a new project with 13 layers. This is just a simple pen & ink style drawing. I was able to create another Krita Koma but not in the layers section. I was poking around on the bottom tool bar when it happened. So I’ll have to amend my previous statement about the layers docker. This time however the koma only lasted a couple of seconds (maybe 6 or 7). It didn’t take as long to recover.

A bit later, just as a stress test, I turned off the auto-save feature hoping to see if that might have been a contributor. No problems for a while and then I just started poking randomly and quickly at the bottom tool bar and was able to crash Krita completely. Just disappeared. I’ve seen those random crashes in the past.

If there’s a common thread it has to do with selecting or clicking on layers or tools. Perhaps in a quick fashion. Krita getting confused by the quick selection process? Can’t keep up with my fast draw? lol A memory buffer setting perhaps?

A SECOND UPDATE: reopened the project and started clicking on the bottom tool bar and am able to make Krita crash completely by just clicking quickly on the bottom toolbar icons. Only takes a few quick pokes and boom - gone. Did this a few times so it’s fairly repeatable. I can share an iphone video if it helps demonstrate. This is a different problem than the koma but at least it’s repeatable.

I wonder if it would be helpful if you recorded your whole desktop when interacting with Krita to capture these random freezes or a crash. It may help developers reproduce it or give some other hint. You could use something like OBS to capture a video and then upload to YouTube or some file share.

However, probably best to hear from one of the maintainers first if this would really be useful or if there are any suggestions how to go about it.

Also, if you’re able, I would check Krita on another computer to see if you can get it to misbehave the same way. If not, then maybe the issue is somehow specific to your current system.

Thanks for responding. Yes it could be something related to my PC. I have an older model Dell laptop I’ll try and recreate the problem there. If nothing bad happens then I’ll assume its something amiss with my PC. Will report back on this in a bit (may be a few hours or tomorrow lol)

There isn’t usually a Toolbar at the bottom of the window, it’s usually at the top.
Have you moved both Toolbars there or just one of them?
Did you click on any particular icons there?

The potential problem there is that OBS uses CPU resources and may affect the result if it’s a CPU resource problem.
Having said that, @larrycross’s desktop PC spec is quite powerful.
It will be important to make sure that no other user applications are running.
Also, is there any anti-virus or other third party security software running. That should be disabled for testing.

Also was looking forward to built-in ffmpeg, but alas, it was not to be found.

What was the error? We should report this. I had already reported one issue earlier.

Sorry good morning. let me add some additional detail. I have the Toolbox docker positioned at the bottom of the screen. I understand you can position it anywhere. I was fiddling with this again this morning and have arrived at a new issue: the total collapse of Krita happens when I click on the Multi Brush tool. That one icon/feature is what is making Krita disappear completely. Total shutdown. Not sure why that one icon/feature would crash Krita all by itself. I was clicking across all the tools yesterday not realizing it was the same icon that was killing it. I figured that out this morning.

So… why the multi-brush tool? What is so interesting about that particular “tool” that it would kill Krita every time I click on it?

to YRH: thanks for the suggestions. I have a laptop I can move Krita there and try this all again on a different PC. I’ll do that this morning and see what happens. I don’t have a 3rd-party virus program installed. Been using Windows Security virus protection only. I’ll look to see what else is running but given that I can crash Krita repeatedly with the multi-brush tool I’d say something is amiss in Krita. But I’ll check it out.

One last comment (which is going to raise the eyebrows I’m sure): I have a paid version of Clip Studio EX. Truthfully I’ve never used it until yesterday. I bought it a couple years ago when I started using my PC for drawing and art. It looked interesting so I acquired it but I didn’t warm up to it like I did with Krita. Krita seemed easier to learn and it had everything I needed at the time to get started. After a few weeks I was embedded with Krita. However, in an attempt to understand these problems, I spent a couple hours with Clip Studio yesterday. I couldn’t make it crash nor did I see a single strange occurrence. Frankly - it worked flawlessly as far as I could tell. I tried stress testing it with ridiculous amounts of layers and tools. Not so much as a hiccup. I know I’m comparing apples to oranges but if an orange works flawlessly and the apple does not, maybe it’s time to switch fruits lol

fyi: there’s a new Krita update available this morning I’m going to install it and see what happens

UPDATE: the new RC1 update fixed the crashing from the Multi-Brush tool. I’ll consider that issue resolved. There’s still the Krita Koma problem but I’ll spend some time with Krita this morning and see if that magically was resolved as well. That problem was harder to replicate
