Selection tools not working properly

I’ve been using Krita for a couple years now and I’ve never had problems until very recently.

Around a month ago, while in the middle of animating, the Outline Selection Tool created a “selection” layer once I used it. The layer prevents me from deselecting or making a different selection until I delete it. I found out that using any of the selection tools creates the same problem.

I don’t know if I accidentally pressed something while working or if this is a bug. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

That’s a selection mask. It is usually only created if you transform or otherwise edit a selection after creating it (like transforming it or growing/shrinking, some other operations probably too). Could be the case that’s now created by default in newer versions of krita, since it makes editing selections easier. It should usually go away by itself as soon as you deselect i.e. by pressing ctrl + shift + a.

Thanks a bunch!!! It’s a little burdensome that I can’t just click outside of the selection to deselect, but at least the key combo solves it

The whole point of the selection is to limit tools to the selected area. Clicking outside the selection with the selection tool does remove the current selection (depending on the tool and it’s mode (add/remove/intersect/etc.) but would just create a new selection at that position, so not very useful.

But the selection mask has it’s advantages too. You can set it to hidden and leave it there in case you need the exact same selection later.

Depends on the tool, for instance with freehand just clicking removes selection, doesn’t even have to be outside selection. New selection is created with click and drag.

@Takiro I think this is an intermittent bug.
It does happen but not with every selection that is made, as I checked in 4.4.7 and a recent 5.0.0-prealpha.

Also, the Global Selection Mask is shown as toggled on in the Select menu, in which case the canvas should show a mask and not marching ants.
Toggling the Global Selection Mask off and on does make it change to a mask presentation.

Maybe @peach could make a bug report at https://bugs.kde.org/ then give a link to it here?
