Shortcuts not working only in krita

drawing tablet
xppen deco 01 v3
windows 11

so the shortcuts ive set up on my tablets software work everywhere but krita, ive uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, downloaded previous drivers, tried a previous version of krita, verified krita’s files, tried both windows ink and wintab. i genuinely don’t know whats happening as it was working perfectly fine the last time i used it

 Hello @Fat_Mustard, and welcome to the forum!

Sounds somewhat as if you haven’t aligned them to Krita’s shortcut assignment.

In Krita under Settings > Configure Krita > Canvas Input Settings and additionally under Settings > Configure Krita > Keyboard Shortcuts you can assign the actions and shortcuts to those of your tablet. And the fact that a lot of other programs work with your setup is only due to the fact that they believe it is a good idea to copy PS as much as possible, but forget that they lose, or never can build up, their own identity because they are stuck up to their shoulders in Adobes backdoor.

By the way, if you haven’t done this already, it is a good idea to create a profile for Krita in your tablets driver interface first. Additionally, after you’ve created that profile, it is usually, but not always, a good idea to disable the use of Windows Ink in your tablet’s driver, and then check in Krita under Settings > Configure Krita > Tablet Settings if the radio button in front of WinTab is set. If there is Windows 8+ Pointer Input (Windows Ink) selected then please change it to WinTab and then confirm the changed setting with the OK-Button in the lower right corner of that dialog and restart Krita. In your tablet driver it will look ~ like this:

the problem becomes that even simple things don’t work, like im not using anything crazy

not a single one of these work and on my pen i only have 1 and 5 set, they also don’t work

edit - (im now using wintab and windows ink is disabled)

For the WinTab/Windows Ink thing:
Have you made this setting in Krita as well as in your driver? So like my screenshot suggests disable Windows Ink in your driver and enable WinTab in Krita, confirm in Krita with OK and restart Krita.

For the shortcuts:
Have you assigned them in Krita to the function you have assigned in your tablet driver?
So here under Settings > Configure Krita > Keyboard Shortcuts

and here under Settings > Configure Krita > Canvas Input Settings

If the settings in Krita do not match those in your tablet driver it will not work.

Michelist

yeah ive done all that, the setting match and still dont work
edit - its like the shortcuts arent registering not thats its the wrong keys

ive genuinely looked everywhere and cant find what this could be, ive found 1 reddit post of a guy having the same issue but no fix

https://www.reddit.com/r/krita/comments/1racme7/tablet_buttons_not_recognized_in_krita/

The link to Reddit only shows a relatively similar issue, not the same, because there it is about a Gaomon tablet using the 3rd-Party driver from OTD.

Okay, then first try the most stupid sounding trick that in such cases sometimes was the solution: Connect your tablet to a different USB port of your device. Preferably with a high quality cable, and if quality was never a thing you cared about, and you have no idea which cable may be your best, take the one you bought last.
Did that the trick? If not ↓

If you haven’t already then first do a full update of Windows and then a full power off reboot.

After that install the most recent version of Krita, which currently is 5.3.1. Check after the installation that WinTab is used and your shortcuts in Krita match those of your tablet? If not set it up and click OK to close the dialog and restart Krita. Does it work now? If not ↓

If that did not fix it then download the portable version of Krita, krita-x64-5.3.1.zip, instead. Unzip it to a folder to which you have full read and write access. If you choose C:\, your Desktop, your User folder, and, if you want, you can even use your Downloads folder.
To unzip it open Explorer and double-click on the downloaded archive krita-x64-5.3.1.zip and Explorer will show a folder with the same name, so krita-x64-5.3.1, the archive has, grab that folder with your mouse, trackpad, trackball, whatever, and drop it into the folder you have chosen therefore. After Explorer has copied all files and folders out of the archive into your chosen folder, open the now unzipped folder krita-x64-5.3.1 and double-click the link named krita in the root of the unzipped folder to start Krita from there. After setting Krita up like you did before try if it works now. If not ↓

Install Windows anew.

And another thing that just came to mind: In the case that you use Tencent’s chat applications, namely QQ & WeChat, close them completely, so that you can no longer see them in the task manager. If you can find remnants of them in your task manager, then select and kill them! The same is true for Discord, at least two users reported that they got “their keys back” in Krita after they terminated Discord in full.

the portable version works, thank you king for the help, although is there a way for me to make it so i can open this version up through steam?

Do you know how to create symbolic links?
If not, then the most simple to use tools for creating such are:

  • Lopesoft’s File Menu Tools, for non computer-savvy users it is the secure way to go, it can only create symbolic links, but besides it has a ton of other very useful functions (the free version is sufficient for most users, but if you often work in your file system it is worth to buy the full version ~$10).
  • Link Shell Extension, a freeware for private use, and nothing I would install on a noobs machine, but it is much more mighty than File Menu Tools.

BUT, for both one thing is true, symbolic links (aka soft-link, symlink) and hard links, junction points etc. are a highway to disaster and data loss if you don’t know what you are doing.

So, if you don’t know what symbolic links are and what you can destroy then you better simply create this one link using File Menu Tools, which I will describe in detail, and then don’t think about touching this function ever after (at least not before you educated yourself about the risks, lime-wires and trapdoors this handy function called symbolic links offers (but you can of course use the tons of other useful features File Menu Tools ships with)). By the way Link Shell Extension has a very good description on it, and Symbolic link - Wikipedia has a lot of background information.

If you decide to try it then download and install Lopesoft’s File Menu Tools.

  • Go to the Steam folder c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Krita\krita\bin\ and enter it (it is possible that you have to confirm a UAC dialog for this).
  • Locate the file krita.exe.
  • Rename the krita.exe into krita.exe.old, for instance.
  • Open the folder into which you have unzipped the portable version.
  • Open its sub-folder bin.
  • Locate the file krita.exe.
  • Do a click with your RMB on the portable krita.exe.
  • Search for File Menu Tools and select the option to create a symbolic link.
  • In the opening dialog browse to the Steam folder c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Krita\krita\bin\, click on the Save button and confirm the following dialogs.
  • Done!

If it works as I expect, you should now be able to launch the portable version directly from Steam. And at least while it runs you should be able to open files via double-click in Krita.
However, I can’t test this on my end, since Steam isn’t my default application for launching Krita.
