Should I update Krita? (currently on 4.4.1)

Hey there!
So I downloaded Krita in like 2020 or something and I’m on version 4.4.1 as of speaking
It works well enough for me tbh, and it’s not lagging or anything, suits my needs I think

Apparently there’s been updates over the years (which I’ve somehow not been notified by the app itself, which is a bit annoying) and apparently it’s gone all the way to 5.1.4

I don’t rlly know whether I should update it or if it’s necessary. I’ve been doing some reading and apparently windows (I’m using Krita on a windows 10 PC btw) deletes one version and updates with like the latest version

I have a few questions tho:

  1. Are the later updates worth it? Are there new features what I should be raving about? I mean IMO I’m still learning how to draw in general (it’s a slow process ) and I think knowing my way around my Krita version helps me a lot.
  2. Do the .kra files work on all versions? I have a few wips here and there and was wondering if I were to update it, would that make those wips inaccessible?

Anyways if any of you are using those versions pls help me out!
Thanks!

Yes, you should update. There have been too many changes and improvements to list them. You can go on krita.org and read the release notes for all the versions that have come out since 4.4.1.

The one thing you should know is that you will lose your tags when you update. Usually nothing is lost during an update but when they made the change from 4.x to 5.x they completely rewrote the database - right from scratch. You will NOT lose brushes or assets, just the tags (if you have any, not everyone uses tags).

Re Krita not telling you to update… sorry you find it annoying that you actually have to update it yourself. There is a way around that where you can get automatic updates. You will have to purchase Krita from the Windows store or Epic. But the free version makes the user themselves responsible to keep up with updates.

Sorry, I just recently started using Krita, so I’m not in a position to answer your question directly, ah… But I know a video, and I think this detailed video will be able to introduce you to a lot of what’s in the new version.

That’s a good video, @Tepese. Thanks for linking it. He only covers a small number of the changes but he does a good job on the ones he chose to cover.

what do you mean by tags? hehe sorry i don’t think I’ve used those before

Some people mark their brushes with a tag like “favourite” so they can find them quickly. If you don’t use tags then it won’t be an issue for you.

oh actually i think i did use some of them bc of how i have my brush order set up.
is there anything else i could lose? custom setup of toolbox, file access, any thing of importance?

also as a general question, will there be problems in the future should i decide to just keep my version and not bother updating?

The way text is saved has changed so when you open an older file krita will prompt you that text will be ocnverted to 5.0 version after if you open the file in 4.0 again it won’t appear the same. Files without text won’t have issue. All 4.0 files can be opened in 5.0. Similarly some brushes have gained new properties of bug fixes so brushes made in 5.0 won’t be working same in older version.

Just to be sure take a backup.

I suppose 4.4.1 will continue to work but if you develop a bug due to Windows updates, I can’t imagine that the dev team would create patches for an old version. I’m not speaking with authority on that, I just know how very full their bucket list is with current and future plans.

The brushes that are created these days, like the oil pastel, and crayons and chalk brushes, watercolour, the special pencil sets etc… None of those are compatible with your version.

You also don’t have the recorder which a lot of people enjoy. But it’s your choice. If you’re happy with Krita, just keep painting/drawing.

what’s that do?

The Krita manual does a good job explaining it:

also the ‘news’ on the opening page will tell you when there is a new version released…as it just did for me. 5.1.5

Hi

You can activate the news to get informed of updates:

Grum999

I’m beginning to wonder whether we shouldn’t enable the news by default… It’s off because we don’t want to automatically make network connections unless people are explicitly fine with that.

I prefer that applications don’t connect to the internet unless it’s needed for normal operation and I know about it.
If it’s decided, for some reason, to have Krita connect to the internet as the default option, I’d like to see a warning notice:

i don’t think i have access to the opening page anymore at this point (it’s a funny story that involves me accidentally deleting the Krita application shortcut so i only access Krita through other .kra files [i have like 1-2 at a time saved])
is there an alternative way to open the opening page?

It’s not possible to lose access to the start page. By opening Krita with a document, you’re by-passing the page. To see it again, hit File, Close. Your document will close and the opening page will display.

If you’re on Windows, you can open Krita by hitting the Windows key, then type Krita.

Once Krita is open, right click the Krita icon in the task bar and select “Pin to task bar.” Then you’ll always has the icon that you can click on to open Krita from the normal start screen (opening page).

You can easily create a krita start icon in a number of ways under win 10. You can do a search for it and open the folder, right click on the krita icon and copy and paste wherever you want including desktop or anywhere else.
