Sizing

I am new to Krita and to drawing in general. I want to create animated cartoons for display on PC and TV screens, but am confused as to what best Pixel size to use. I currently use 786 x 576, but understand that 1920 x 1080 is better. Also, what is the best dpi and ppi?

Thanks

Alan

I don’t think there are any TVs sold now that has less than 1080p.

Judging by comments on YouTube, people are disappointed when a video is only 1080p, so if your computer can handle it, maybe aim for a higher resolution still.

PPI and DPI depends on the size of what you’re displaying your art on. With a large projector a 1080P image can be 1 PPI, but then you’d probably be looking at it from further away.

DPI / PPI don’t matter if you’re making stuff for display on screens. They only affect the print size should you print your images. So as long as you’re setting your image dimensions in pixels, don’t worry about DPI.

1920 x 1080 is the best if you want to upload it to a platform like Youtube, you can get better quality when watching the video, however, if you want to make something small or simple, I’d advice using any canvas size you like/you feel the most comfortable with. Here are some examples [EXP] PIXEL BUST - elissinia by thighsoks on DeviantArt | oh boy by Tytofi on DeviantArt And as for the PPI, if you want it to be only displayed online, the best option is 70PPI (advice from a former teacher I had that instructed us on PPI and DPI), by default Krita’s PPI is 300 (at least for me).

Yes 1920x1080 only, but you can set up to 300dpi regardless even if you don’t need it.

I would probably worry more with safety margins more than other resolutions when setting up your shots.

What happens above 300 dpi?

Great advice, confirming what I thought to be the case.
