[SOLVED] Quickly switch between small brush and big eraser

[SOLVED]

When I use Krita I draw with a farily small brush and when erasing I toggled “separate eraser size” so that I can have a big eraser and a small brush and change between them easily.

The problem is, if I change the brush or restart the program, my eraser size goes back to what my brush size was and I’ll have to adjust that again.

I do not like manually selecting a different brush because I want to be able to change to my eraser fast, I don’t want to have to manually click on my eraser while focused on my drawing.

So what I need is this: how can I switch back and forth between a small drawing brush and a big eraser brush with pressing only a single keyboard key. I am sure there’s a way of doing that so if you happen to know how, please let me know

thanks

PS: what would be awesome too would be to press and hold a key while using a specific tool and when releasing the key going back to the last tool. So when drawing and wanting to erase something you’d press “E” and hold it while you erase and then when releasing the key go back automatically to the brush or whatever tool you were using. Its so much smoother to work that way

SOLUTION:
I found a plug in that’s dope.

basically it creates like a brush slot where you select a brush and then you change to other slot and choose other brush and when going back to the first slot it remembers the brush you use.

I assigned a brush slot to “E” and I chose a big eraser brush.

PS: oh and I had no idea how plugins worked so I set it up with this video but its in portuguese (since I speak spanish I found it pretty easy to follow), but its really super mega simple and the program in the video is set to english so you can just ignore the voiceover and follow along anyway

I’m glad you found a solution.

I was thinking on deleting this since I solved it myself 10 minutes after posting it but I’ve seen many people asking simmilar questions so I’ll leave it up I guess hahahas

There are 2 types of erasers in Krita, the default eraser uses the brush you have selected but in eraser mode. The alternative eraser uses a specific brush as an eraser.

At the same time, you can have Krita save the changes you apply live to each brush by checking that option in the brush editor.

Lastly, krita has by default a plugin called “10 Brushes” where you can assign different brushes to specific keys. You can also duplicate the same brush and make it act differently. So, for example you can press “1” and use your brush and when you press “2” it uses the same brush but with a different size and in eraser mode.

thank you for the insight

the problem with the 10 brushes solution is that if I assign B for example to a brush an E to an eraser brush I’ll have to switch between only those specific brushes, if I am using another brush I’ll have to assign it to a different shortcut which is annoying since my brush shortcut is B.

The plugin I’m using doesnt have this problem. E chooses whatever eraser I was using last time I used and B chooses whatever brush I was using last time I used a brush

And that’s not the same as the option in the second image I posted “toggle eraser preset”?

I dont know how the save brush changes live option works, if that saves the difference in size betwee brush and eraser even after closing and reopening the program, that would be a solution.

However I really hate erasing with the brush in eraser mode, I have certain brushes that need to be used like 10 times to finally erase but in brush mode they work really good so I cant modify them. The plugin would solve that issue luckily

Yes, some brushes in eraser mode do nothing or you have to make too many passes.

I just got home and was able to test if the “toggle eraser preset” would allow you to edit the brush and have the settings saved even after closing and opening the program again. But it doesn’t, you reopen the program, the eraser brush returns to its default size.

The only thing I can think of is to leave it as you prefer and save a new brush created by you. Afterwards, making the size adjustment is a quick thing to do while you draw.

I was thinking to maybe have the docker with the different brush sizes (I don’t remember its name) and then switching sizes way faster, because I do like that the toggle eraser makes you use only one key of the keyboard (that’s why I like the press and hold option some programs have, where while you press and hold a key, in this case “E”, you’ll have the tool that shortcut activets only as long as you keep pressing the key and when releasing going back to the last used tool), but still some brushes won’t work on eraser mode which will still require changing the brush so I’ll probably just stick to the plugin, works very nicely

You could try the “Ten Brush Slots” plugin, there you have the ability to put two or more brushes into slots, and if you only put an eraser with a brush into a slot you can cycle “through” those two brushes. The only thing to hope is that each of the two remember its size.

Also, “Buli Brush Switch” may be a way.

BTW: The docker you asked for is the “Quick Settings” Docker.
