Some custom brushes for imitating poster paint anime backgrounds!

Hello all! Here’s a set of custom brushes I made (plus a couple of modified versions of built-in brushes) which were designed to assist me with painting background art in a style similar to old anime backgrounds painted with poster paints.

I created these brushes by actually dabbing paint onto paper in various ways (using a set of Sakura poster paints I have on hand), and then scanning it in. I also modified a couple of built-in brushes (mainly the wet brushes) in order to achieve a little more of a textured look.

Here’s a few studies I made using these custom brushes:

And a full landscape painting I made:

The full set of brushes is as follows:

  • GD - Square Wash (wide brush which follows pen tilt, similar to a knife brush)
  • GD - Liner (modified version of Wet Paint Details which adds more texture with light pen pressure)
  • GD - Leaf Fill (dabbed paint which can serve as the base layer for tree canopy or bushes)
  • GD - Scratchy Leaf Fill (like above but less opaque & more scratchy/textured)
  • GD - Wide Leaf Fill (a wide dabbed paint pattern which can be used as the base layer for things like pine tree leaves)
  • GD - Leaf Scatter (a scattering of leaf shapes for quick extra detail)
  • GD - Grass Fill (fan brush dabber which can be used to add quick grass or moss texture)
  • GD - Cloud Fill (soft cloud fill brush used to block in the base layer for clouds, then paint detailed shapes & lighting on top)
  • GD - Pine Fill (basic pine-shaped brush to quickly fill in wide areas with forest)
  • GD - Paint Spatter (paint spatter brush which can be used for things like stars)

You can download the bundle here!

Anyway just thought I would share! ^w^
