Firts of all, thank you everyone for the amazing job on Krita
I wanted to ask if it would be possible to implement the “brush smoothing” options (basic, weighted and stabilizer) on the freehand selection tool? Being a freehand tool it make sense for it to offer a stabilizer too.
I use this tool a lot to do quick color fills and selections to paint inside, and having the ability to use a stabilizer would really really help. I already use this workaround using the Shapes fill brush and then creating a selection of it with the select opaque option, but have it in the freehand selection tool would be amazing.
Clip Studio Paint is the only software i know that does this out of the box and i use it all the time in there, i’m sure lot’s of people would love to be able to create smooth selections.
I just use brush strokes. And you can do them on a local selection layer. I don’t really see select opaque as being much of a workaround its the tiniest extra step.
another work around might b to duplicate the shape you made and shrink it a few pixels then fill that
That way you don’t run into chance of fill tool either missing some spots or (if fill grow is on) it won’t fill outside your lines.
This step is pretty insignificant.
Edit; you could even create a TenScript plugin script to create a shrunken duplicate lineart and switch to fill tool.
Using the Global Selection Layer option ON and the Shapes fill brush inside this layer end up way better than using the “select opaque” way, Thank you for the tip.
I use freehand selection a lot, it’s the backbone of my workflow. I’m not using it to fill areas, I’m using it to render and it’s kinda moot to discuss alternatives when every artist has their workflow which can’t be fully predicted.
No matter what smoothing is useful for any freehand tool. For selection in particular I find it indispensable. I’d greatly appreciate if it were implemented in Krita.
its kind of small idea from me about lasso tool + a stabilizer from freehand brush tool.
why do i got the idea of this? well when i draw with freehand brush tool, of course most of us use stabilizer, but then when i select lasso tool after that, its all went full wild, it feels like the movement of the cursor like raw input from the tablet which kind of unstable, and the selection need some more fixes because of it.
but then when i tried a brush with shape engine which similar like lasso tool but for brush, it feels smooth because the stabilizer is applied into it because its still count as freehand brush tool, but its instantly fill the selection with color.
that got me wonder “what if lasso tool have the same stabilizer as in the freehand brush tool with the same parameter just like brush with shape brush engine?”.
“but Theo why not using magnetic selection tool?” first of all using that tool is like took a lot of time and sometimes select some area that i don’t want too, and with lasso tool its like much quicker and more versatile, for me its good but it could be a little more improvement, and thats my idea of that improvement.
what do you guys think of this, if youu have something to tell let me know :)))
Unfortunately I’ve run out of votes, but I agree it would be a useful feature.
If I need to select something with a stabilizer, I also use Shape Engine, which would work like a lasso, I do the following steps:
• Create a new layer
• Use a brush with 100% opacity to create the desired shape.
• Then click on the layer with the Ctrl key, and then delete the layer with color or hide it.
• Then go to edit the selection.
The way people use freehand varies a lot. Despite mentioning before I use it often I’ve never shown how and describing doesn’t do it justice. Unfortunately workarounds won’t work because they take away where the tool shines for me: Speedy flexibility.
(okay, not so speedy here with Krita struggling to update the large file view while being recorded )
It’s not only for obvious sharp details like that, I’ll rely on it even when blending. You can keep very large texture brushes and airbrushes confined to a specific area, it’s great.
The lack of selection stabilizer is the one thing I mourn when moving from Windows to Linux. My fav app doesn’t support Linux and Krita doesn’t have it for selection yet – I hope!
Voted! I’ve been able to achieve a faster worflow that would definitely benefits even more from this. Sometimes I find it incredibly difficult to only use brushes on an illustration that’s full of details, or where all layers are merged together.
