Inspired by @MarurunK , I decided to learn how to draw human body right now. However my first reference that is a boy’s head with perspective, which doesn’t work well and after I half-completed the sketch, I want to throw it into trash bin.
While I’m drawing this, I found myself just copying the pixels from the references, without the ability to figure out why it looks like this.
At this moment I found myself know few about human head structure, so I went to some online courses to learn what forms a human’s head for about an hour. And find a relatively easy way to draw a human’s head in front of view:
Then I use fine lines to give more consise feeling of this sketch, and that’s where the first drawing comes from.
In fact, I didn’t start drawing human because I have never done one before, and I’m afraid it looks weird. It’s my last irregular mouse sketch that give me some confidence on observing objects. It was MarurunK who gave me the last kick of starting human drawing. (Thanks MarurunK )
I believe that the final sketch looks much like a normal boy’s head. (Do you think so? Comment below to let me know ) I’m so glad that I didn’t have to give this picture a footer mark to tell what I have drawn.
Hey, good job! Actually, I think drawing the head directly from the front is pretty challenging. Balancing the eyes and the jawline is rather difficult. Also it’s a very unnatural angle, but of great practical value for some usages (like 3d modeling reference).
Don’t be discouraged to try “more advanced” angles with reference. It will get more intuitive over time.
That’s not so obvious to me because I first stepped in this area. But one of my friend does agree with you that drawing the head directly from the front is difficult.
I would like to make a live 2d model in the future, haha.
I’ll try to learn how to draw from different angles with even more confident because of the fact that “It will get more intuitive over time.”
By the way, if you are wondering what’s wrong with your boy’s head drawing from the side, you simply didn’t indicate the side of the head. You can fix it like this:
The only thing I did here was to move the eye to the center and skewed the ear a bit up to show perspective. (Sorry for the sloppy lines, I only had a mouse on this PC )
Forgive me if you don’t like me doing a correction like this, I only wanted to demonstrate that you were not too far off! In short, don’t give up and experiment! What happens if I move this part a bit? You may be surprised to see the picture become better. Once you fix the biggest mistake, look for the next one. This is how you end with a great picture.
YRH THANK YOU!!! Your kindness and professional currection is well appricated!
Yes, I want to figure out what makes my version looks bad and have failed to do so because of a lack of knowledge. But I used to think I have to solve this all by myself, just like when I met some problems while learning software engineering alone in middle school. Your generious guide not only saves a lot of time for me, but also makes me warm, finally getting some help on my hobby.
The result of your currection is unbelievable! The main structure looks pretty fine now. I didn’t realize little changes will make such a great effect until now. Everything makes sense after knowing ears are on a side of head.
Thank you for your encouragement! Now I have more confidence on drawing, glad to join Krita Community(and meet you).
Hello, I read that you struggled a bit with heads in perspective!
If this helps, this is the place where I have learnt how to draw heads
Really concise, easy to understand, and overall, a great great (did I even mentioned it is free?) piece of knowledge, highly recommend
Go through this, if you want, whenever you want
I only read, and tried to redo, what was said in the pdf file, if you want to find the pdf file you can find it heeere:
Your recommandation and kindness is well appriciated! Actually these days I’m currently working on my first original artwork to save a primitive copy of my initial drawing level, and I’d like to learn this course when I finished it.
(Thanks to myself in the last 10 years for learning English so that I can go through
such a nice learning material in foreign languages with no difficulties and get so much help from you .)
By the way, you did a good job on drawing human body and anylizing poses(from your portfolio) !
