As shown in the picture i am using a tip with low opacity soft edges. my problem is that in strokes the individual dabs add up to one quite dark stroke. how do i stop them from doing that? i want the value of any given point to be the maximum value any dab has had at that point rather than an addition of all the values. the wash option stops this from happening when a stroke overlaps itself but does not seem to help against the overlap inside of a stroke. usually i would just make the brush softer with the flow settings but my goal here is specifically to have a linear gradient from the edges of the stroke to the centre which is impossible if the dabs add up
Open the brush preset editor and select Painting mode in the side bar, then change it from build-up to wash.
it is already set to wash, and i did mention that this does not help. the wash painting mode seems to limit dabs from not adding up over their opacity value, but does not stop them from adding up onto values that are within their opacity value which is my problem here, as the maximal opacity value is 100%
You could try setting the brush blending mode to Greater but that would also stop you from drawing over something that has higher opacity.
The blending mode applies to the whole stroke, not the individual dabs, so this unfortunatly does not resolve the issue.
I do plan to use the brush in the “greater” blending mode when I am done with this, to have the overlay between strokes also act like this, but for individual strokes it does not make a difference.
(edit for punctuation and formatting)
if a fix to this does not exist, maybe i should make a feature request for either adding an additional painting mode or changing the wash painting mode to work on actual opacity of any given pixel instead of keeping addition and just limiting to the opacity value of the dab
after more experimentation, it does work with blending mode “greater” and painting mode “build up” in combination . so blending mode does apply to every singular dab with “build up”. this solves my issue for now , but that painting mode wash does not allow for detailed tip shapes still is not ideal
