Strokes for Krita default brushes do not look as expected (new installation)

I just now installed Krita on my Windows 11 PC. I use the XP Pen Deco V2 tablet which seems to be working fine with pressure. I tested some of the Krita brushes and the strokes don’t seem to look like the previews on the website or how the strokes have looked in videos of artists I’ve seen use Krita online.

I don’t have any experience with the app yet so it’s hard for me to say if truly all of the brushes are behaving incorrectly, but it seems very apparent with the Ink-8 Sumi-e brush that the stroke isn’t right. It has a constant stripe in the middle and looks a bit odd around the bends.

I’ve attached a photo of a stroke I made and the preview image from the website. I’m not sure what could be causing this discrepancy. Thanks for your help!

 Hello @GloriaDraws, and welcome to the forum!

If I had to guess, then I would say that you have raised the size of this brush, at least that is what your stroke pattern tells me. But here it would be better to stay at the preset size of 60 pixels or even go below but not under 20 pixels in size if you do not want to totally lose its stroke pattern.

Alternatively, you can change the brushtip from “bristles circle random” to “bristles circle medium”, as the tip seems to be the cause of the gap at higher sizes.

I was testing in a 4000x5000 px document so I was working with the brush at a larger size. At 60px it looks right. I changed the brustle tip and that fixes the weird stripe effect. I think I prefer the look of the brush at its default size but good to know that swapping out the tip is an option. :flexed_biceps:t5:

Thank you both, super helpful!
