Terms of use for the Krita logo

Hi all,
is there some “terms of use” rulebook for how / when / if the kirta artworks (logo, kiki) can be used?

My concrete example would be that I am thinking about creating importer assets for some game engines. The assets would be free and open source. I just want to know if I am allowed to use the krita logo (the colorful disk with the brush) in promo art, icons etc.

If yes: is there some official source where I should get the current logo from?
If yes: Would it be okay to use Kiki too? I totally understand if not, just askin’ as it would be really cool.

If you are hesitant to say yes I can offer to submit everything to you guys for review so you can decide (before anything goes public) whether or not the use of any krita related artworks is okay.

I’ve found this thread (https://krita-artists.org/t/usage-of-krita-logos/42355) but sadly it is already closed so I couldn’t ask there:

Thank you.

@halla in the thread you links says you can use the logo to refer to krita in manuals tutorials and other places . You just shouldn’t assert that you are somehow related or sponsored by Krita foundation. Still lets see what @halla says

Kiki is the creation of the artist @tysontan.
I think his artwork is FOSS or CC but you’d need proper confirmation of that.
Either way, a clear credit would be the proper and polite thing to do.

He designs mascots for FOSS projects so you may want to see this:

Thank you for the infos and the links.

I will of course credit and link the original authors. Just don’t want to get into trouble using something that’s not allowed. - I did not know the masco and the logo were done by separate people. My assumption was that all this “belongs” to the foundation.

Update:

My internet is choking when I try to load the tysontan website. I guess such pretty images need a lot of pixels (or points)

I have found this quote on the website: “I provide mascot design for free and open source projects. Free of charge and under free license.”

  • Though in terms of a license that’s not very “precise”

I’m usually very permissive of other people using my work. But since Krita’s logo and mascot are Krita’s trademarks, you should use them with that in mind, as @raghukamath said.

To be more precise on my part:

  1. I have donated Kiki to Krita, Krita Foundation now owns Kiki.
  2. The pictures I made for Krita are dual licensed under Creative Commons BY-SA and GNU GPL.
  3. You can find more information here: Mascot Kiki | Krita

Thank you very much for the detailed info and the link to the about/kiki page. All the info was there. It seems I did just not see it. Thanks to all for replying so quickly

@tysontan sry about the “precise”, reading it now it seems a bit off, my apologies.

You once owned Kiki?!

Legally speaking, in most countries, a creator naturally owns all rights to their creation until they gave it away. This could lead to unpleasant complications (like the BSD mascots).

To make sure Krita have full control of its mascot, I volunteerly transferred Kiki’s ownership to Krita as a “donation”. In fact, every FOSS mascot I designed had the same treatment. In other words, I ceased to own them as soon as they became official mascots.
