The Promised Neverland Fanart

Do you guys ever finish a work and feel like it was the best you can do? All the work after it doesn’t seem to have as much details as the previous one did. I am feeling this way about this piece, it looks pretty good to me but I have no idea how to actually grow from here. I have a lot of learn but still am feeling lost on where to start

I’d say that the lineart is very good. There seems to be remains of a previous sketch that could be cleaned up.

The crosshatching looks like it was done in a haste.

The colours are good, but this is where I think you could make the biggest gains. Imo, the colours should follow the lineart better. You seem to have used an airbrush where maybe you should have used a hard edge brush.

Are the pink things in the sky clouds? I have never seen clouds like that, so I’ll suggest using reference for them.

Love the composition and image overall, but since you asked…

You could easily sell the style as deliberate choice to me, I like that it doesn’t look too perfectionist

Looking a bit closer, there’s only two thing I’d really tweak.

  1. I like the pink clouds in the sky, but the sky color doesn’t quite fit. To me it’s a bit too saturated at the top, and transitions too quickly to the bright color of the horizon. And take a bit of the green out in the lighter parts too, that gives more of a warm dusk/dawn atmosphere the rest of the image suggests.

  2. the birds could need a bit more shadows, they look a bit too flat compared to the rest. It’s tricky though with their feathery flowing shapes…at least for me.
Not sure if you’re okay if I post my experiment.

-edit-
I just realize it’s an adaption of the chapter 176 manga cover, which has a bright sunny feeling though…and that I’ve actually seen the first season of the anime.

Awesome job!

And, How did you do the gradient on the cliffs and background? It looks really good. Good work overall

Thank you for such a detailed comment! I tried this style as a study and it fitted me better than simple potraits I had been doing up until now.

  1. I absolutely agree with the color of the sky, I think it should have been tinged pink to reflect the lights lol, I should have added a layer to make the clouds blend in a little. I see what you mean, there should have been some pink in the sky, especially in the bottom I think? Should have used lighter pink instead of pale blue in the bottom!

  2. Oh I didn’t noticed the birds! I was afraid of them being darkened too much and it was my first time drawing birds so I wasn’t sure how to color them without coloring each one manually!

Yes! It’s my first time trying to differ from the reference! I do love TPN, and if you don’t mind recommendations, the manga is pretty good. I loved the perspective and the style. Posuka Demiz’s art is just so good!

Thank you so much! For the gradient for the cliffs after I finished laying down the basic colors, I selected the area (by using Similar Color Selection tool) and then added in soft air brush! The light source is kept in mind. As for background, I used the gradient tool on the background layer. I hope it helped and thank you for the comment!

Thank you so much Rakurri! I would suggest checking out Posuka Demiz’s art, this a study of their artstyle drawn by me!

Thank you for such a detailed comment as well as nice comment!

The crosshatching in the rocks was indeed done in haste but thanks for pointing that out! I will try to be more deliberate with it next time!

I did used a hard edge brush for coloring! The air brush is simply for the lighting (the red shade) in individual characters! I hope you can see with the way the girl’s pants are colored! I think the only place I used airbrush for coloring is the grass but thanks, I will keep it in mind next time!

Oh yess, I tried to do a more stylish version of clouds, this was what I was going for! But thanks for the insight!

Thank you so much for your insights and thank you for critiquing this!

I think what bothered me was that the lighting is bleeding into areas that I thought should be in shadow.

Regarding the clouds, there certainly are may sorts of them. Your last example seems to be some sort of cirrus cloud. However, most all of them have some sort of three dimensionality to them. They have an underside that’s usually a bit darker, one side that’s facing the main light source etc, they get smaller with distance etc.

This is a resource I found helpful for painting skies. Maybe it will be good for you too. (skies at 38min 55seconds)

And finally a reminder to disregard what I say if you disagree with it. This is a subjective matter.

Okay I’ll have to post my experiment, because it’s interesting how the sky affects the birds.
When I toned down the sky a bit so it matched the color feeling the rest gave me, I noticed the birds automatically stand out a lot more and give more room for shading (I only modified on some of them):

The sky example you added has some pretty extreme saturation, and while that works on its own, I think it’s just a bit too extreme for the color choices you made on the rest of the scenery. But some warm orange/red color towards the horizon may work, but keep in mind that if you have the sun in your back, the horizon will not be as bright and vivid as when looking towards the rising/setting sun.

I would be happy to check it out! Thanks for the feedback!

Woah, this is absolutely brilliant! Thank you for taking the time, it definitely looks better and coherent now! I still think slight warm tones near the end would sort of cement the tone, a sort of greyish yellow? Again, this is sort of brilliant, I was going off a reference for the sort of sky I wanted so dulling it down makes it look more of a part of the drawing, also it gives it an almost delicate look? Thanks so much! I would take this advice to the heart, and thank you so so much once again for correcting me!

Nice work and technique, I like the idea of separating the black outline layer from the coloured layer.

Thank you! I added a group and then all my color layers were within the group! The colors turned out cool when I closed the lineart so I decided to save it!
