There's something I've been always wondering about perspective assistant tools

Yes, that was my idea too. Like we have presets for different canvas sizes we could have defaults for common perspectives. However Krita would need vanishing points with relative positions so it doesn’t matter if the canvas is 1600x900 or 3200x1800.

It still would require knowledge of linear perspective from the user, there is no way around it, but at least give a time saver and a starting point.

I imagined my plug-in idea to work more like a wizard or gimic filter, in that it guides you through the steps to set up a perspective.

Isn’t the point of assistant to guide me to set up my own rulers, perspective grid or anything else. How is a “sane default” going to be helpful. Will you just put the assistant on canvas and paint? If not what is the point of the sane default. I am just confused on this thread. Even in the case of the new two point perspective assistant. It appears on screen I tweak it to my liking and according to my scene and go on to work. I don’t see how the default is insane or not helpful. Sorry this seems like bike-shedding to me, a discussion without any problem trying to find a solution for it. Sorry if this sounds rude, but I literally don’t see a point in here.

If someone just writes in bullet point in simple language what the issue is about may be others can contribute properly to the thread.

The main questions are
1 - what exactly is the problem with the current perspective assistants?
2 - Are they hard to set up?
3 - Do they need any presets? If yes what is the correct preset and how useful it will be if user will anyway move the guides.

I might not be the best to give an answer to this, but as all opinion could help :slight_smile:

  1. I think the problem is just that for users without any experience of perspective, it could be difficult to place assistant to get something that can make sense or that can help to guide you for what you have in head

  2. Set up is not hard, but it could need time and many essay before having something for which you’re satisfied with
    Example with my BuliKong, it took me time to define how to place the 3 vanishing points to get the result I had in my head; it was in an iterative phase: place 3 vp, draw some lines; erase, move vp, draw some lines, erase, move vp… until I got satisfied of perspective result

  3. My point of view is not “do we need” but more “how”, because preset for me means nothing, I’m sure that in 99.999% case a preset or a template can’t match to any of my needs; and providing 1, 2, 3, or more preset, you’ll always find someone that is not satisfied; one will need low-angle, another one high-angle, someone else want to be near to subject and me I want to be far from subject, wide focal length, short focal length, centered, left or right positioned, … ???
    There’s to many possibilities to be able to define what a “sane” perspective templates should be

What I understand with blender or firealpaca is you can easily from a cube, move your camera around the cube and define angle of view (I prefer “focal lenses” terms but not sure that it could be understood by non-photographer)
By moving around the cube (camera rotation, translation, roll, angle of view; cube size), you can have a better idea of what you’ll get, and easily define where vanishing point should be; in synthesis, a 3D cube let you:

  • Having a good idea of what perspective will be
  • Fast to check different configuration of perspective
  • Easy to set vanishing points

This solution is not perfect especially if you have a complex scene in mind but it could help.
And for really complex things, a dedicated tool like blender to help to determinate composition and vanishing point position might be the solution I suppose.

Just chiming in here: There’s no particular rule that says vanishing points must be 90 degrees apart. That is what you want if you’re drawing a single cube. Most architecture is based on 90 degree angles, so it’s a pretty common use case. But if you have some other kind of shape, that assumption goes out the window. And if you have two cubes, with different rotations, things get more complicated again.

On a higher level, the question here seems to be: “How can we make it easier to find a nice composition in perspective”. My solution, after literally spending half my life trying different things, is: use a 3d package to create a rough sketch. Then use the vanishing point assistant to let you fill in the details you need.
