Tips for Pixel Art

I have come from doing Pixel Art on Aseprite and was frustrated about how to do some things that are easy in Aseprite.

The most critical for me was the ability to dynamically adjust the HSV of a colour throughout the image. In Aseprite you can do this by using an indexed palette and changing the HSV of the indexed colour. This will be obvious to experienced Krita users, but I have just worked out how to do this in Krita as follows.

  • Select all pixels of a single colour using the Similar Colour Selection Tool. You may need to adjust Tool Options to: Reference → Make the selection using a merged copy of all layers, and importantly uncheck anti-aliasing.
  • Select all layers (or the layers you want to change)
  • Move your image off center because a window will appear in the middle of the screen in the next step though it can be moved.
  • Filter → Adjust → HSV Adjustment (or Ctrl + u).
  • Ensure that Preview is checked.
  • Adjust HSV sliders as required.

For some time I could not work out why I was getting additional colours in my pictures, and why the selection tool was selecting additional pixels which weren’t the colour I was selecting. To solve this make sure anti-aliasing is off in the different tools, as it creates these half tones. Also in some tools you will need to select ‘nearest neighbour’ as the filtering algorithm to avoid creating new colours.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m sure many will find it helpful.

PS - I moved it into the Resources category

Thanks, I wasn’t totally sure where to put it.
