How do I make an existing layer the transparency mask of another layer?
For convenience, put the intended transparency mask above the layer you want masked, then do right-click -> Convert -> To Transparency Mask.
In case you put it on the wrong layer, you can drag a transparency mask and put it on top of another layer, to apply it to that layer instead.
Any transparent pixels in the intended transparency mask will be converted to black so bear that in mind when you first paint/draw it.
