I decided to open this topic to post drawing tips and tutorials found on Tumblr. I start with this:
I found this the other day actually
and this tutorial works
my example after reading the tutorial above
Perspective tip, for erikdonovan. I also used something similar. Sometimes you don’t need a super-detailed perspective and this one works for those cases…
A common mistake in drawing is to create characters with proportions and shapes that are too similar to each other, looking like clones. Here’s an example:
Notice that the shapes of the faces, the eyes and mouths, as well as the size of the characters are practically the same. While different clothes help mitigate the problem, they don’t entirely solve it!
The OneBadNoodle blog, the source of the image above, shows a suggestion on how to fix this glitch.
• Animation tutorials! •
• I start with this one. What the author teaches I’ve seen in other tutorials (and you probably have too)… but he made the explanation clearer.
• Another author also simplified the whole thing by showing principles of animation using… pokemons! “Solid drawing” is a good example. You can find others by visiting the “Archive” of his blog.
• Drawing a cylindrical object in perspective - Interesting: I never set the vanishing point in the first place, I only do it later…
• Preparing a grayscale artwork to be colorized - I did this a lot in Photoshop, but differently
• These are for those who like to make pixel-art: Tutorial 1 / Tutorial 2
• Clothing References •
If you are going to illustrate a scene that takes place in another country or at a certain time, the ideal is to consult clothing references to find out how people dress or used to dress.
Even if you are illustrating something completely fictional, the references will give you a starting point. This post from Art Tip Storage, a Tumblr blog provides several links on the subject.
I had already posted other links on my blog, you can access them by searching for the references tag.
Here’s a preview of a great tutorial on drawing hands:

==> Last minute note: It appears that Tumblr now requires you to have an account to access content. Maybe they’ll go back and release the content to non-subscribers, maybe not…
It’s not the end of the world, as registration is free (still ). So, the message is given.
• How to Draw Hair Shine - I do something similar, but this artist showed an important point: the shine should help show the hair in three dimensions… something I (and a lot of people) forget.
• How to draw simple grass for a game - (pixel art style)
• How to draw pinstripes - The result is somewhat uneven, as the lines tend to be thicker or distorted in some areas. Depending on your art style, it might not look as good… in any case, it’s worth a try.
