It does sound exactly like the problem I had. Though that was with wacom. You mention setting to update Xwayland, which I don’t know about, but downloading the package manually and installing it works for me (requires computer restart to work though)
you will have to do this each time you update ubuntu. Thankfully I can see an update is in the works for Xwayland.
