Using Krita with toddlers / kids and locking the interface (part of)

Dear all,

We started using Krita as drawing application for kids (20 months old).

They use their fingers on the touch screen on laptop. We can run on Linux or on MS Windows. We are on version 5.1.x, always up to date. We would like to lock the interface so that they cannot close the application, or change the interface, and they can only use two tools (brush and eraser). The educator, on the other hand, by using a combination of key should be able to use any tools, close the application, and save the work. Is this feasible?

Also, when the kids save their work, it is normally saved as name, year, month, day, hour, minute. Can we do that automatically?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Kind Regards
Kermesse

There is canvas only mode where everything is hidden unless you specify which docker to not hide. I think that along with touch docker would be close to what you want.

Thank you! I have already tried Canvas only, but zoom and rotate is still active, so if they try to draw with several little fingers at the same time, the canvas shifts, rotates, and zooms, and it may disappear or change look to much, and the kids become very frustrated … Does it make sense?

You can supress/delete all the Canvas Input Settings that give touch/gesture control in
Settings → Configure Krita → Canvas Input Settings:

Right click anywhere on a line to get the Delete Shortcut button.
Look in the other sections of the Canvas Input Settings as well to see if there are any more gestures controls that you may want to delete.

You can create a ‘Kids Settings’ profile when you’ve finished and restore the default profile for yourself and other educators to have full gesture facilities when you want them.

You can also create a named Workspace (docker arrangement) that is suitable for the kids. One day, they’ll learn how to change it of course

Thank you, that is fantastic, tomorrow I will set it up and see how it works!

Dear all,

I tried the solution that was suggested (creating a separate profile + canvas only mode), and it works, but is it possible to have 1) at least the colour palette visible so that the kids can choose different colour for the brush 2) have a reduced tool bar with just brushes and eraser? Kind regards and thank you again

If you’re in Canvas Only mode and you want to choose brushes and colours, you can use the Popup Palette which is activated by a right-clock or a one finger tap:

The activation action can be changed and it may be better to change it to something more complicated than a one finger tap, such as a two finger tap.
If you do that, you need to check that whatever you choose isn’t used in any other section of the Canvas Input Settings. If it is then you’d have to delete it from the other section to avoid clashes.

The brushes on the Popup Palette can be chosen by tag so you can create a tag called ‘Kids Brushes’ that has a few different brushes and an eraser on it for their use.
I suggest that you try the Popup Palette to get used to it and see how it works.

As for a palette, when you go into Canvas Only mode, you can’t keep just the palette docker and remove all the other dockers.
However, you can create a ‘minimalist’ workspace. e.g:

For the Brush Presets docker, you can use a tag so the docker only shows ‘Kids Brushes’. Krita is very customisable so you need to explore the various possibilities.
