Using "Pin to Timeline" on multiple nested folders and paint layers causes crashing

Was working on an animation earlier and Krita crashed when I pinned a nested folder with paint layers to the animation timeline. It’s easily reproducible with empty folders and empty paint layers, as well. The crashes seemingly inconsistent at times. Sometimes it will pin successfully, but it seems to crash more often than not. I’ve managed to make Krita crash at least a dozen times when testing this in a blank Krita file. I’m not sure what’s causing it. Can somebody else test it?

Things I’ve tried Right-click context menu > “Pin to Timeline” on:

  1. Multiple empty folders.
  2. Multiple empty nested folders.
  3. Nested folders containing at least one paint layer.
  4. Nested folders containing color-coded paint layers
  5. Color-coded folders / nested folders.
  6. At least four to ten layers, color-coded, sometimes in folders.

Using Krita 5.3.2.1 on Windows 11.

Can’t reproduce it on 6.1.0 0c7fbbb and 5.3.2.1 0619060. Not sure what the crashes could be. I can try testing this later on my Win10 PC if the dang thing boots up at all, but I’ve had no luck reproducing anything of what you’ve mentioned.

I should have specified. 5.3.2.1 (0619060) is the version I’m on as well.

I managed to reproduce the crash again. I was able to make Krita crash by pinning to the animation timeline, as little as 3 unique folders (without any color labels) and at least one paint layer in each.

Sometimes, this crash can occur with as little as two layers/groups. I haven’t been able to make Krita crash with anything less than this.

It can be an annoying way for Krita to crash, but the only way to avoid it seems to be to not pin too many things to the timeline at once. Again, I have no idea what causes this. I’m just reporting what I experienced.

I hope someone will chime in that can also test this, because even with the video, I can’t unfortunately reproduce this at all. I’m not sure what could be the culprit here besides maybe a plugin since it’s not my usual area of work

Here are my plugins. If I remember correctly, the only plugins I ever installed myself were “Timer Watch” and “Palette Generator”. Everything else comes pre-installed with Krita, if I’m not mistaken (somebody please correct me). If I have time, I’ll try to reproduce the crash with those disabled.

But yeah, it’s a really weird bug. For me, I’m being very careful now whenever I’m pinning stuff to the timeline and I have my autosave set to a really low interval, so I suppose it’s not causing me too many problems at the moment. Though, if anyone else is experiencing the exact same type of crash, then I feel like this issue should take some priority.

Someone on IRC has confirmed that they can reproduce the crash; so I think it’d be best if you filed a report on KDE bugs! It’s the best venue to attach any/all crash reports & videos in one place.

I hope the reason for these crashes can at least be found soon, so you don’t have to fight with autosaving every 5 seconds :-[ <3

I filed the bug report, by the way. Wasn’t sure if it went through or not because soon after I had trouble accessing the KDE site for a few days, but here it is.
