This is so beautiful - the pose & expression are very soulful. Very clearly visible he’s meant to be playing from the heart. I love this stylized coloring and would love to paint like this. I attempted it recently and I wound up adding more shading than I had originally intended. I’ve actually saved your image for future inspiration! Thank you! You produced it so well.

I totally get your predicament, I’m just the same I guess my brain naturally leans towards more realistic approach and I have to force myself to not add more shadows. I had a couple of references with really light values and anime-like coloring and I was constantly reminding myself to follow it
I hope we will both figure out our ways through it eventually I like your Christmas cards’ designs! I think the shading there adds the sense of coziness and solemnity (mystery? not my native language, sorry ) to the scenes

Yes, I tend towards more realistic also lol! It’s so hard to hold back on details and shadings.
You saw my Christmas cards! That’s so cool. Yes! Thank you so much. Those emotions are exactly what I was hoping to convey! Christmas to me is a blend of both coziness and solemnity. (English is not your first language? Wow. You do very well!)
I see what you mean how those moods were created from the type of shading. I feel enlightened by your comments. Maybe not all styles of art necessarily match the mood of every image. Stylized and realistic each have their own emotions they communicate. 
I was attempting to imitate also 
. I had a few reference shots. I tried limiting myself to basically only 3 tones with each color (shadow, mid, highlight), with little to no variation of shading between them. I also tried to keep the transitions between the colors somewhat harsh and precise. I thank you for your hopes to my success in future! I do look forward to when I can reach for this style when I know I really want it.
