This spring and early summer we’ve been exploring some local flora on our trusted packraft and I’ve collected a bunch of references, so I’ll be sharing some of the paintings that came out of it. So first here are some water lilies, they were blooming early June and it was really breathtaking to be around so many of them at once.

This looks awesome! Do you have any tips on how to get water to look realistic because I’m currently struggling to get the water to look right when drawing 
(Also I love the way you drew the lily pads!)

Thank you so much! I don’t feel very competent to share tips, because water is something I struggle with myself, and only recently started touching the subject. For me it came down to painting large masses of color first, and then getting more and more into details, but in small increments if that makes sense? Then also observing closely the reflections and worst of all, ripples. They are indeed confusing. But I simplified them a bit. I noticed some things: values and colors of the highlights help achieve realism - so even in a dark, green water those spots of reflected sky (blue) make a nice job.
